Jan 17, 2016 so what I'm getting is kendrick fans think there smarter and think more in depth than drake fans ok thats funny good talk - DP
Jan 17, 2016 rap is black music, but gkmc is for the most part just a hip hop album. Tpab incorporates a lot of different genres and the reason it was praised to this level is because the musicians who actually worked on it probably gave their best. Like the jazz in tpab could honestly hold its own against some of the best jazz albums of the past few years. Matter of fact, it features Kamasi's best work, and kamasi is widely praised as the best jazz musician of the past 3 years.
Jan 17, 2016 Young people have access to the music of the past if they are truly interested in learning about the music of the present. Of course the very casual fan won't f--- with George Clinton, they don't care enough to dig deeper into what influences their favorite music.
Jan 17, 2016 It has nothing to do with that, and its not tpab being "more complicated" or experimental. Matter of fact, I don't think it was experimental, he knew was he was doing... dude worked with the absolute best musicians of this era. You can have the argument that the jazz & funk on this album are some of the best jazz and funk elements of the past 5 years.
Jan 17, 2016 So it's a fusion of hip-hop and jazz, what's so weird about saying GKMC is better because Kendrick himself is primarily a hip hop artist? TPAB was great for what it was, but even as a fusion of different genres, it didn't equal to GKMC, IMO.
Jan 17, 2016 not really. its basically section 80 on steroids and he basically admitted last week that he wanted his first album to sound like tpab but he was just not confident enough so instead we got gkmc.
Jan 17, 2016 the thing is, I wouldn't compare gkmc to my favorite rap albums (illmatic, RD,...) but I would compare tpab to some of my favorite jazz albums of all time. Musically, tpab is a lot more impressive than gkmc
Jan 17, 2016 Alright, fine, it wasn't experimental, whatever. I don't want to continue argue about which great album is better than the other. To me, it was something Kendrick wanted to do, but didn't, but got the chance to do it, and did it. It was something different for him, it wasn't his usual. I disagree with your Section80 on steroids comment but hey that's just me.
Jan 17, 2016 I'm sure the die hard kendrick fans would agree that gkmc was not his usual, it's easy to see it was the black sheep.
