Mar 18, 2015Yeah that whole "f--- you you have terrible taste if you like this" approach is childish and to simply put it, annoying.

So annoying how you can't say you dislike or have a problem with a popular album without everyone going after you, asking you to explain a million things and dissecting it bit by bit. Not all of us care enough to do that or have time for it. Nothing's changed about that since the SL days, no wonder I stay out of music discussions most of the time.JXY, M.I.C. and pHiLLip fARkLe like this. -

So prominent critic Anthony Fantano just rated this album a 10/10.
Just to give a little scope, he has only given two other albums a 10 on initial release.
Believe the hype guys, our n----- made it.

It literally is the "thesis" of the song, if you want to put it that way lol. It's a track called "institutionalized," and he's talking about breaking free from what you've been conditioned into. So yeah, his gradma's advice about s--- not changing until you put in some effort is pretty relevant.
And the entire song, from the vocal inflections to the overall atmosphere, 100% gives leeway for a line like this to be part of the track's backbone.
And come onnnnn there's nothing wrong the "if I was a president" bridge.
If you're gonna say it's heavy handed, tell me why. And then tell me why that negatively affects the song, or doesn't work in context, or is bad...give me somethin man
Im trying to understand what some people's reservations are about the album, you know I genuinely am lol
him proudly, and defiantly, playing "i" in the streets of compton after how critical he is of himself on "u," feeling like he gave into his vices throughout "for sale" and "momma," coming to terms with being a hypocrite on TBTB, etc, is just so well done.
the housekeeping skit in the middle of having a breakdown on is also u >>>
I REALLY need one of you to actually tell me how the writing and storytelling on this is "derivative and/or corny/trite" not just keep repeating, and then pointing out disjointed examples that you yourself agree isn't indicative of the project as a whole.
I even went as far as to point out the album seems to get more and more pointed as it reaches the end, due to character on the album becoming more aware of what he needs to do -- but I'm not getting any feedback lol. Just more seemingly unfounded assertions of the albums "triteness" -

I think a lot of the reason this feels like it "drags" for some people, or is less engaging, or interesting, or gripping or whatever, when compared to GKMC, is because the latter was actually pretty straightforward narrative wise. There was nothing that really confused you, and the skits at the end felt like scripted movie scenes -- that, combined with the fact that the rapping/beats were "traditional" for the most part, lead to an album that was VERY easy to latch on to
So although it may be hard to find something to latch on to the first few times around, TPAB is arguably more cinematic than GKMC. It juggles more ideologies, is presented in a more unique manner, and is basically an improvement on his previous work in every way to be honest.
It also doesn't share any of the same lows as GKMC, and even if it's highs aren't as distinguishable as the latter the album, on average, the former contains more good tracks.Peter Parker, Chacrateazey and Meero like this. -

The Pac bit is embarrassing because it's overwrought and self-important. It overinflates Pac's importance as some sort of prophet (which, much as I love Pac's music, has always grated me to a point anyway). But more importantly, it puts Kendrick on a pedestal as a new-generation torch-bearer. It's one thing for a listener to say "Wow, the way Kendrick delivered his message in song X and song Y was really reminiscent of 2Pac." It's quite another for Kendrick to spell it out himself with a cut-and-paste fake interview for 8 minutes (or whatever) to end his album. It's beyond heavy-handed.
What I just posted is a more in-depth "legit argument" than anything you've posted in favor of the albumVos, Joshua Smoses and JXY like this. -
