First thing that came to mind was biggie's "party and bs" where the fight breaks out in the middle of the song and the music stops and then continues after.
    Similar but still completely different.

Honestly, maybe I haven't let TBAP fully digest yet, but alot of whats there is an extension of the themes he established in GKMC. It's a different beast in a lot of ways, sure, but in what defines Kendrick as an artist (and youve said this, at least vaguely) hes grim and humorless and moralizing. This starkness worked as a conceit in gkmc and a little less so imo in tbap. Maybe tbap is the album that lets him explore different things in terms of persona -- he's certainly explored different avenues when he does features, and tbap has a range of production styles. But, it's not an evergreen persona, like Jay's.... again, like youve said, Kendrick is a little like Eminem. He's earnest, but it's kind of youthful (which was part of gkmc's glimmer, and pac kinda alludes to it in their lil 'interview' on mortal man)

but yeah, the sophomore slump thing is real, but depending on what makes an artist/filmmaker actually popular, its totally surmountable. kendricks problem is a question of persona.

So anyway, that's what I mean. Kanye had the savvy to give up the pink backpack and the bear after the school trilogy. Standard warning about the need to evolve, etc.

question of degree - bush was a bad president but in retrospect, out of the lefts rhetoric about him was too emotional and over-the-top to be accurate. eminem is bad, but in a common boring age malaise kind of way. dylan was awful when he was 40 too.

Haha, I like this. "talking over the din" is a great phrase I might use. And the true detective comparison is on point. You're right, but that's the more reason to respond with measure and context. just my opinion tho

i don't doubt that - and im not suggesting its anything you're doing purposefully. Look, its a universal question anyhow -- the role of critics in assessing art, how do they respond to large cultural responses, where do personal biases come into play. you read some of these sanctimonious pieces from smart, educated film writers on pieces of s--- like imitation game and you wonder what the f--- theyre thinking. ( i think it has to do with network and community than most are willing to admit - each group assigns its own value placeholders. )

interested in how your dislike of macklemore differs from the run-of-the-mill contempt

i honestly don't think he's guilty of cultural appropriation, inasmuch as that can be said about a white rapper. he's smart and conscientious and has spoken extensively about the subject. (this is the boneheaded anti-semitic costume aside, of course.) i just think he's a saccharine writer.
