The difference now is Kendrick is one the biggest artists in the world. He was only popular within Hip Hop back in 2012.
Now that Kendrick has arguably got more buzz than Kanye it has changed the thinking of Kanye's stans as now they see him as a rival. Is it a coincidence its the hardcore Kanye stans who say its a bad album & @WPG seemed disgusted for me to suggest Kendrick was more popular than Kanye atm.

So its embarrasing paying homage to one of the GOAT's. How does it put Kendrick on a pedastal when he is interviewing him.

I thought there were some brilliant moments on this album, but I didn't hear an instant classic on my first listen. Of course, that was after midnight and I haven't had time to give it another spin for the last two days.
Going to go through it again today and get a real impression of it.

Among the things that I thought were less than perfect on my first listen (though I'm open to the idea that this is because I was very tired) were that some of it seemed to drag on, songs or sections were too long. I also didn't give a s--- about the Pac interview, don't know if I will ever listen to the entire thing, let alone consider it an important part of the album on future listens.
I didn't hear anything horrible or bad on that first listen, but it also wasn't an album that dragged me in and made me want to stay up all night doing repeat listens. I was kind of glad when I got to the end, and I haven't had the strong urge to do that second spin, haven't made any time in my busy schedule.

    edit:
best things on the first impression to me were his flow on the interludes (dat jazz), Hood Politics, Snoop sounding like a person again.
Also, King Kunta. I was exhausted but that song still almost had me up dancing.

But why would you repeat it over and over as if it's the thesis of the song? Like, ok, maybe it sounds like something an ornery old lady would say, but it's still awkward enough I wouldn't want to repeat it that many times, much less make it the apparent crux of the song. Also, the "If I was president" bridge comes across as incredibly heavy handed to me.

And to clarify, I know it may seem like it, but I'm not trying to just say "look at all these corny moments, the album's obviously s---". I'm still trying to give it it more listens to figure everything out, but the entire album strikes me as too self-important and heavy-handed. The pac interview being a microcosm of that.. He's still an incredibly talented rapper, and I'll never deny that, but so far I feel his actual writing and storytelling on this has been derivative and/or corny/trite.

Again, by repeating the line it solidifies the message the album is trying to give. "s--- don't change until you get up and wash your a--- n-----" echoes the message that change starts from within, that the black community need to unite and respect to each other instead of splintering into different gangs and whatnot. Have respect for each other, and then they will respect us. I think it's very important that certain things in this album are repeated for this reason.

glad you enjoyed it..you're gonna end up liking the album a lot more in a few days :daps:

I think a lot of the reason this feels like it "drags" for some people, or is less engaging, or interesting, or gripping or whatever, when compared to GKMC, is because the latter was actually pretty straightforward narrative wise. There was nothing that really confused you, and the skits at the end felt like scripted movie scenes -- that, combined with the fact that the rapping/beats were "traditional" for the most part, lead to an album that was VERY easy to latch on to

So although it may be hard to find something to latch on to the first few times around, TPAB is arguably more cinematic than GKMC. It juggles more ideologies, is presented in a more unique manner, and is basically an improvement on his previous work in every way to be honest.

It also doesn't share any of the same lows as GKMC, and even if it's highs aren't as distinguishable as the latter the album, on average, the former contains more good tracks.:idk:

I really don't get what you're talking about here.

It literally is the "thesis" of the song, if you want to put it that way lol. It's a track called "institutionalized," and he's talking about breaking free from what you've been conditioned into. So yeah, his gradma's advice about s--- not changing until you put in some effort is pretty relevant.

And the entire song, from the vocal inflections to the overall atmosphere, 100% gives leeway for a line like this to be part of the track's backbone.

And come onnnnn there's nothing wrong the "if I was a president" bridge.

If you're gonna say it's heavy handed, tell me why. And then tell me why that negatively affects the song, or doesn't work in context, or is bad...give me somethin man

Im trying to understand what some people's reservations are about the album, you know I genuinely am lol

This is no more self serious than GKMC. If anything, this presents a MUCH wider range of emotions, has conflicting ideologies, has political commentary as well as personal introspection, and, as Ive said, it's downright more cinematic than even his last album

him proudly, and defiantly, playing "i" in the streets of compton after how critical he is of himself on "u," feeling like he gave into his vices throughout "for sale" and "momma," coming to terms with being a hypocrite on TBTB, etc, is just so well done.

the housekeeping skit in the middle of having a breakdown on is also u >>>

I REALLY need one of you to actually tell me how the writing and storytelling on this is "derivative and/or corny/trite" not just keep repeating, and then pointing out disjointed examples that you yourself agree isn't indicative of the project as a whole.

I even went as far as to point out the album seems to get more and more pointed as it reaches the end, due to character on the album becoming more aware of what he needs to do -- but I'm not getting any feedback lol. Just more seemingly unfounded assertions of the albums "triteness"

There are plenty of substantive responses I regret not being able to address due to a busy work schedule atm (and as a result I've still only listened to this twice), and I hope to go more in depth with you guys on this album in time.......but this post deserves a "you've gotta be f---ing kidding me", right now

I mean seriously are you 12

but honestly tho @M.I.C. , feel free to tell me what you've tried to discuss so far that's been derailed or ignored or not answered to your satisfaction

really tho, I'd love to know why there's "no point in trying to actually discuss kendricks album on this site"

it's not my fault that, for whatever reason, people who are critiquing this album are choosing to respond to bait from Koolo, or kanye trolling, and other idiotic s--- rather than posts me, big country, and others who have actually been trying to have an open discussion
i have, its still as good :emoji_thumbsup:
