I don't think there would be a point in really breaking down why he dislikes the album based on the often unexplained and generalized dickriding I've read in this thread. I wasn't talking about you specifically, you don't have to take it this personally. If you've properly broken it down I'll be open to reading it. I'm sure you've spent more than enough time going through the album already.

I guess I shouldn't say that nobody can properly dissect the album right now, like I said, I'm SURE you've listened to it and dissected it quite a bit. But seeing people call it a classic and comparing it to Kanye albums, and calling Kendrick the goat, and saying this is the best west coast album of all time and s--- like that is where "embarrassing" comes in. Like you said, there's no f---ing chance I can read through even a fraction of this entire thread but these posts tend to occur more than the non-dickriding ones so they kind of stick-out to me. And it's not even close to the same as the reaction I'm getting from people IRL which turns me away from the discussion here from the start.

I really don't have much of a problem, you just blew this way out of proportion because you got offended over something I said to Swizz, half-joking. Calm the f--- down.

I'll be back in 3-4 months to give my opinion.

I think that the problem is that the negative comments / criticisms about the album are being burried under tons of exaggeration from the other side (the majority). There are some good responses from both sides but it's hard to keep up with the thread, so yeah, maybe things have to settle down a bit first? And ofc it's still too early to go very deep into this record, at least for me, I haven't had time for more than 2 listens yet.

edit: yeah I didn't see MIC's post earlier

uh, you're describing middle schoolers. if you think those of us who are vocal about this being a bad album are doing it...like, in defense of another rapper? then you're sorely mistaken.

if a non-kendrick rapper did this you'd be mocking him--or at least you should, because it deserves it. i mean, come on, a fake interview with tupac? it doesn't help that kendrick is a terrible actor and oversells the whole thing.

EDIT: @M.I.C. killing the thread tbh. 100% right in his posts. saying this is the best west coast rap album is saying "this is one of three west coast albums i've listened to."

It's also okay to be extreme in your hate for it, while providing little to no defensive (other than
lol im calm b im at work, just hated seeing you act like everyone, indiscriminately, is biased in this thread -- when its Swizz/WPG that arent really responding to the legitimate feedback they've received. Like, at least Joshua Smoses, who also isnt big on this (yet) has a proper back and forth about it and doesnt just ridicule or berate the people who like it

and yeah lmao i have broken it down a bit already. and you're kind of right about IRL -- ive talked to people who think its cool as f---, but dont think they "get it" yet and people who just outright say this isnt what they wanted and probably wont listen to it, not that it's "bad" or anything. the d-ck riding, as always, is strongest on the forum haha

And I, personally, haven't even used the word "classic" ONCE when talking about this album. Or even rated a single track yet, let alone the whole album.

My intent on "breaking it down" or discussing it in depth, is to get a better understanding of it because I know that'll make me enjoy it more. Im just lucky the production was fantastic enough to hook me on the first listen/im not cynical enough to nitpick on things that are purposefully kind of corny or just plain weird on this album

ive had about 4 front to back listens total...it's definitely more sprawling than GKMC, so it's harder to grasp, but it's still not like overtly complicated. It's actually just a more interesting way of telling a narrative than GKMC...where you pick up the pieces rather than have them laid out in front of you

there's the younger kendrick persona reconciling with his present day self, and vice versa (because, as kendrick himself put it, they are two separate entities), the political commentary that gets more pointed as Kendrick himself discovers the kind of message he wants to spread, dealing with fame through the "lucy" character (pretty straightforward as lucifer/temptations of fame and success/etc), and so forth

a lot more is there than GKMC, but it still shouldn't take anyone whose into critically analyzing pieces of work like this too long to fully grasp whats going.

Almost forgot about the Dre production on HMADC and now that I really pay attention to it, I don't understand how I let it fly under the radar for the past few days. Loving this song.

That Anthony Fantano review was perfect, setting the bar high for Big Ghost.

I still prefer the modern sounds of GKMC though.

I don't think TPAB is as good as S80 or GKMC. But it is a still a great album, It doesn't reach the highs of those albums but it is very consistent.
