serious question: how do you guys feel about the accusation that kendrick's playing into so-called respectability politics with "the blacker the berry"? craig kinda brushed it off in his review, but at least he acknowledged it.

Lol I guess so. They generalized this album as "kendrick talking about Trayvon Martin". After I heard that statement I was like

if you take respectability politics to be proving oneself to be the same as society and reducing stereotypes then TBTB contradicts the statement, he adheres to many stereotypes throughout the track, in what bigger way could he seperste himself from his white audience(hence the skepticism of this being a 'pro black' album. I think his views are much more basic(although I don't think this is a bad thing) saying that I'm 'black' you're 'white', who cares as long as we 'respect each other. He uses mortal man to convey that point but he's also saying they need to respect each other too. Respectability politics is almost preaching to the 'white' man that the 'black' man is no different, where as Kendrick acknowledges there are differences but brushes them aside like they are irrelevant(you might call this respectability).

I don't think it's fair to make any assumptions about his intentions by taking one song out of context. That's the same as what the Nazi's did to Nietzsche. But overall I don't think kenny is too concerned with race, instead the difference between the rich and the poor, it just so happens that where he lived most people were black and most people were poor.

I also think the name is an alter ego for Dre because it literally has "Dr" in Dragon.

It's like he's signing a letter Love Dre.... No Wait.... Love Dragon...

Also Love Dr = Love Doctor.

I think this idea people -- let alone black people -- can't be critical of the black community is bs. Obviously there's major societal and institutional issues that have consistently put black people at the bottom -- in fact, I tweeted out this great summary yday http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.co...n-region&WT.nav=c-column-top-span-region&_r=1 .... but for a prominent black artist to not be able to be introspective/thoghtful about his own people, or explore issues of complicity or hypocrisy/complacency? i think its a valid question to raise by his critics, but ultimately kinda silly. like of COURSE its wrong for the gov to s--- on blacks, but kendrick is getting at something a bit different

topic shouldnt be off the table, at least in terms of content. In fact, I think we need a honest conversation about race that breaks through some of these antiquated assumptions. so these pc/language police can waste their energies on other 'worthy' causes

Whether the song works is a diff matter
