is it really that simple though? i ask because i think berry works because it's so specific and conflicted. but that trayvon martin line really, really bothers me, and more than one black friend has expressed to me how hurt they were by it.

Hurt how? I'm not black (or.. am i) so alot of #blacklivesmatter is beyond my pov.... but the fact the line elicited such a strong response in them demonstrates the songs effectiveness, no?
He's talking about his own hypocrisy - being critical of the community yet engaging in behavior or lyrics that fulfill stereotypes etc. he mentions trayvon as part of a super personal exploration of his own behavior (or at least the character of the black g--- b-----r)

k dot it's a touchy subject, try and just don't mention it

Do you know who produced 'How Much A Dollar Cost' instead?
This is really surprising: I read about it being a Dre beat and it totally sounded like one. Someone must have some real talent to copy his drum style, at least a little bit :melo:

Btw, I'm done with the album. :pierce:
This s--- blows me away, the vibe it creates is more than impressive. It will have to sink in a few days before I come to more detailed conclusions.
Right now, I'm just happy. Just happy. :mjcry:

Nearly the entire album is about black oppression......

Get off your PC highhorse. If I had to break it up, the album is like 60% about oppression of minorities, 30% kendrick introspection, and like 10% criticism of the black community. But you're gonna stand there and act like Kendrick is some secret Uncle Tom?

Let's be honest here. You're mad that everyone likes this album, and youre throwing whatever you can at the wall to see what sticks. It's pretty obvious because you claim to have liked Blacker the Berry, and now you're saying the politics of it hurt the entire project. It's been a sad week for S80s local hippie

Its makes no sense. @WPG won't share his thoughts about the album just say thats its bad & act above anybody who likes the album.
Yet he keeps entering the thread just to s---t down anyone else's opinion & to get people talking lol. He hasn't even stated why he thinks its a bad album.

to be fair to @WPG - I didn't take it as him suggesting that we were necessarily seeing respectability politics in this album, just that it is a conclusion some could draw and was worth discussing

he said "what do you guys think about..."
and some people responded like "you're wrong and the idea is bs not worth discussing"

    nope, not what i'm doing

this is stupid for two reasons. first, even if the politics were offensive (on the whole, they aren't), it wouldn't make the album any worse. there are great works of art with terrible points of view. second, this is a conversation i've been having since the blacker the berry dropped. stop flying off the handle as if i'm trying to discredit the guy as an artist.

you guys complain i'm being too flippant in my posts. then i try to dive into a dicey subject, and i get this vicious blowback for not being unquestioning when i try to get you to discuss something that is challenging and worth talking about. great, thanks!

    again, nope.

    holy s--- hahahah.

the insinuation that kendricks criticism somehow make him an uncle tom is pretty unfair. theres likely a train of thought where todays opinion mongers could accuse malcolm x of belittling blacks. the whole subtext is silly..

But isnt the point of the album/song up until then that he's conflicted? That's he's not entirely thinking clearly? He's trying to reconcile a hatred for society thats basically been embedded in him due to his upbringing, with newfound introspection.

What bothers you about it? That he seems to be critical of himself for standing up for a just cause (the murder and subsequent proceedings surround Trayvon)? Isn't that the point? That at this stage he can't tell whether or not he should be saying "f--- whitey," or trying to empower himself regardless of who the oppressor is -- and that leads him to conflicted, emotional, conclusions like blaming himself for being a hypocrite because he was upset over Martin's passing, while still perpetuating black on black crime himself?

well, he is friends with Nocando
