from listen #1, yeah, I didn't really like it at all initially. It grew on me quite a bit on listen #2 and my opinion has stayed basically the same since then

It's just really flawed in my opinion

It's got a whole slew of tracks that I don't consider to be truly top tier songs that would belong on a great/classic album (For Sale?, Momma, Complexion, and Alright come to mind). And there are the songs that I consider good/fine but...again, not necessarily something that leaves a lasting impact (like These Walls and Mortal Man). Some of those good songs are screwed up by unfortunate choices as well (Mortal Man ending in that embarrassing 7 min 2Pac interview; i being changed as much as it was). I also think not all the writing works at all (how obvious is that cornball Lucy s---? and that homeless man bit as well?) despite mostly being quite good. I know I'm sounding like a broken record, my complaints really haven't evolved too much.

By and large it's a strong effort. An album as widely praised as GKMC is tough to follow, and Kendrick deserves a lot of praise for going as left field sonically as he did with TPAB. And it also contains some brilliant moments - songs like u and Hood Politics and King Kunta are worthy of being mentioned as some of Kendrick's finest songs. But I can't help but feel that as a larger, cohesive statement, Kendrick's reach exceeds his grasp.

I think this was the best album Kendrick ever made.

From beginning to end all great tracks.

I will never in my life understand ANY shade Alright gets. Production is fantastic, Kendrick kills both verses, rapping in a lot more accessible manner than 99% of the album (which is refreshing in it's own right), and it's a PERFECT follow up for "u" (which you seem to love). I don't know why it's getting this overlooked.

Momma has a great outro, and verses that are oddly hinged on a technical rhyme pattern, but still manage to tell a story perfectly well. It has a great vibe to it, I don't really know what else to say. What about the verses dont you like?

For Sale? I think was meant to obvious...if not, then the whole "lucy" thing wasnt really a well kept secret. i thought it was an obvious metaphor from the start (like "uncle sam"), and I think For Sale is great for reasons other than just that theme. The hook is fantastic (it's the favorite part of the album for one of my roommates), the intro is pretty great, and, I mean, the rapping is still pretty top shelf stuff lol

Complexion I agree is probably my least favorite track overall. Wont skip it if I play the album through, but on shuffle I have been.

I'm still not too big on These Walls either, but a different roommate (i have 3, and they all have different opinions on it lol) just told me how much he loves the hook tonight -- and i agree. i saw someone trying to say something about the lyrics for it, but there absolutely fine in my opinion -- and it sounds great. song itself just hasn't grown on me that much.

mortal man is just a little underwhelming for me, but i got more into it with each listen. Pac interview isn't nearly offensive enough for me to skip it in context...but if its on shuffle, ill probably skip the song itself.

I think Mortal Man, These Walls, and Complexion are my bottom 3

What about TBTB? Think you're underrating Wesley's Theory and Institutionalized as well.

    This albums pretty great m8

    :wow5:

The album is flawless in its message.
The album is flawless in its production.
The album is flawless in its craft.

This is why it's ranked as the fourth best album of all time by a very respected collection of critics.

Critics are not to be listened to in every instance, although I take their word for it as I feel that it's a master piece as well.

Everyone has their own opinion, but to those that don't like it may want to re evaluate how they listen to music.

This album should be listened to with an open mind and replayed many times. Only when you are nearly hypnotized can you appreciate this art.

This album is not meant to be listened to casually or in the background, although a few tracks can be such as.

This is real, old school, classic music with a modern twist. Stop missing out on such a great album.

Nah definitely not, I love the straight forwardness of it. He obviously meant to have it play like this, it's not like it's supposed to be a huge clever metaphor that you have to decipher. He just sets it up like a casual conversation, it's so goat.

And the best part is, after painting Lucy in such a sinful light, we know he bought into everything Lucy was offering. The idea of signing to a label being comparable to signing a deal with the devil (or lucifer as it were), is what he wants emphasis. But we know kendrick himself eventually got signed, and his younger self is himself for doing so. But beyond all that, I just think the rapping is great

It's GOAT because it's creative, it has a powerful concept, name a song J.Cole has done that's better than Blacker The Berry or Institutionalized or anywhere near the caliber of Mortal Man.

This Kendrick thread is too fun. Lol.

There will definitely be a huge turn out though. When he did this at the staples center for GKMC :banderas:
