At concerts, people often get pulled up on stage by the artist. They rap/sing, they dance, they hug, and eventually, they get ushered off the stage. What we usually don’t get to hear about is the impact standing alongside one’s favorite artist may have.
During Kendrick Lamar’s performance at the inaugural Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival, the Compton native noticed a young man named Logan who stood in the front row and sang his heart out along with Kendrick. Half way through his performance of “u,” he stopped and pulled Logan on stage before speaking on suicide and depression. Yesterday, Logan’s brother, Reddit user GetGowenz, recounted the event and shared Logan’s side of the story on r/HipHopHeads.
According to GetGowenz, he and Logan grew up in a good family, but had trouble in school; both were bullied. Logan would often suppress his emotions “because he felt like admitting he was depressed was giving up.” With music being a way for Logan to escape, he attended Okeechobee Festival to see his “favorite musical artist,” Kendrick Lamar.
After standing in the same spot and waiting for Kendrick for over nine hours, Logan finally got to watch the rapper perform “u,” a song that Logan had written a 1000-word essay about for school just two days prior.
When Kendrick pointed out Logan, Logan thought Kendrick was asking for someone else, but eventually made his way up onto the stage, where Kendrick talked about how depression is real and how despite not knowing Logan, people like him are why Kendrick makes music. After eventually leaving the stage, Logan got to watch his idol from the side of the stage perform the rest of his set.
Since the concert, things have changed for the better for Logan. According to GetGowenz, Logan now takes school seriously, is committed to losing weight, and he’s since found a girlfriend, all of which GetGowenz CREDITS to Logan’s short time alongside Kendrick.
“This has 100 percent been for the best of my brother,” says GetGowenz in his Reddit post. “I’m so thankful he got the chance to join his idol on stage.”
If you didn’t already admire Kendrick Lamar, this heartwarming story probably changed that. Watch Logan join his idolon stage at Okeechobee Festival above, and read GetGowenz’s post here.

Swizz Beatz' 5-year old son, Egypt, is responsible for some of the production on Kendrick Lamer's new album "untitled unmastered."
Kendrick Lamar surprised fans late Thursday night when he dropped off those “untitled” tracks from the late night appearances in the form of an album via iTunes dubbed untitled unmastered. However, what might be more of a bigger surprise is the news that surfaced following the album drop of one the track’s producers…Swizz Beatz’ 5-year old son Egypt.
Taking to Instagram, Swizz boldly announced that he was having a proud dad moment when his son’s production was responsible for track 7, “2014-2016,” on the album. His caption read, "This is the best Dad moment everrrrr!!! Congrats to my son Egypt for producing his 1st track on this amazing Kendrick Album […] he’s only 5yrs old wowwwwwww @aliciakeys look at our lil guy baby […] #blessingsonblessings thx #Kendrick for investing in the future !!! Track 7.”
For further evidence, Swizz later posted a clip of Egypt playing the beat in the studio. He wrote, “Egypt making the beat for Kendrick !!!! Only 5yrs old #Kendrick ⚡️⚡️ ⚡️⚡️⚡️ shout out to the youth !!!!!!#blessingsonblessings FYI no help on the beat!!!”
For what its worth, the entire track wasn't completely done by Egypt. According to producer Cardo, Swizz is responsible for the second half of that beat. And let's be real, he maybe heavily involved in the first half too, but his son definitely had his hands on it.

Kendrick Lamar Makes It Personal at Charged Dallas Show
Kendrick Lamar unveiled himself to a rabid audience Thursday night, stepping out from behind shimmering curtains onto a stage drowned in red neon light with an accompanying sign that read “Pimps Only.” The Compton-born artist moved past a gaudy stage setup complete with a white leather sofa, a black panther sculpture and a zebra skin rug to plant his microphone stand at the front of the stage. The crowd sounded as if it could hardly contain itself, but before Lamar acknowledged them or rapped a single lyric, he took a few seconds to coyly take his position behind the microphone, weaving back and forth like a boxer hesitant to set up a haymaker. At the time, the gesture didn’t seem to be more than a playful touch from a charming entertainer, but as the show progressed, the magnitude of the moment played out to be much greater.
Lamar’s show in Dallas at the South Side Ballroom was one of the first of his Kunta’s Groove Sessions tour, which is only seeing an eight-city run. While the tour was initially billed as a series of intimate shows in support of his seminal album To p---- A Butterfly, in an odd turn of events, the show ended up in one of Dallas’ larger venues instead of the originally planned setting of the 1,500-person capacity South Side Music Hall. Although the Ballroom has the potential to hold up to 3,800 people, the room was about three-quarters full, maintaining some semblance of intimacy. To Lamar, though, this was no doubt an intimate affair. He mentioned early on that he’s grown used to playing in front of 80,000 or 100,000 people, just part of the whirlwind of change his life has undergone recently.
The 28-year-old Lamar’s performance was fantastic, as sharp and well-timed as any seasoned stage veteran. Lamar’s ability to perform his raps live with intensity and enthusiasm is admirable when so many rappers are resigned to letting a backing track do the work. The natural rasp to his voice is enthralling, and delivers home the thought that every Kendrick Lamar song is important. His backing band, dubbed the Wesley Theory, added depth to the rich, soul and jazz-inspired sonics of To p---- A Butterfly, something a backing track could not have done. With all that said, it was Lamar’s brutally honest soliloquies between songs that generated a personal connection with the audience and propelled the high energy of the show to its epic finale. It’s both endearing and jarring to listen to an artist as celebrated as Lamar unveil his insecurities.
He spoke of the toll on his psyche over the last six months, as his life’s done a complete 180. While he’s been told continuously of his own greatness, Lamar said he’s tried to convince himself that he is who the world says he is. He spoke about the weight he feels on his shoulders to be the new head of his household — not just his home, but how he represents his entire family through all of history.
“This s--- is personal, man,” Lamar said. “This s--- is personal.”
And with that, Lamar’s initial hesitation to step to the microphone at the beginning of the show made sense. To p---- A Butterfly is immensely personal and important to Lamar—it’s much more than a follow-up to his debut album Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, it’s his soul and mental health on record. The only way for him to properly perform the album’s tracks would be with absolute transparency, and so it’s no wonder Lamar limited this tour to an eight-city run in smallish venues. Because if he’s going to bare himself like this, it should only be for fans who are willing to snatch tickets to a show that sold out in 30 seconds. This may have been the only opportunity for his fans to hear tracks from the landmark 2015 album performed live, too.
“This might be the first and last time I perform To p---- A Butterfly,” Lamar told the audience.
It’s possible this could be hyperbole to bring a greater fervor to his set, but last night’s finale felt like it’d be hard to top. Iy might be worth calling it a wrap on this material. After his powerful soliloquy and a run of tracks including “King Kunta,” “i,” “The Blacker The Berry” and “Mortal Man,” King Kendrick left the stage. Before he could make his triumphant return, the crowd began a chant of “We gon’ be alright!” the hook from his latest hit song “Alright” and the predicted encore. Walking back onto the stage, Lamar had a genuinely astonished look on his face. The crowd refused to slow the chant ,and as he’d done throughout the night with the Wesley Theory, he began to compose the chant, calling for it to grow louder, and then slowly bringing the chant down to a slight whisper. This played out for several minutes. Before long, Lamar asked his band to start the track and the show hit its ultimate climax.
“Alright” may be the most important rap song of 2015 for a lot of tragic reasons, and if this is the last time Lamar will perform it or any material from To p---- A Butterfly in Dallas, the Kunta’s Groove Sessions tour was given a proper sendoff.

Visionary rapper Kendrick Lamar is only just getting started. In his brief reign as the King of the West he's been unbelievably dominant. He's shown how freestyling is done with infamous "Control" verse, and he's earned Grammys, broken streaming records and, with his most recent release, helped resurrect jazz as a vital art form. The Compton MC did all of this before, on Wednesday, he turned 28-years-old.
Lamar is on his way to leaving a huge legacy in hip-hop. Already, it's possible to see what his impact will be. In an April interview with Mass Appeal, Lamar shared how lofty his goals are. This quote sums up the impact he's begun to have and one day hopes to realize fully:
Positivity: So much of Kendrick's music and actions are dedicated to supporting his community and encouraging listeners to reassess their values. He's donated large amounts to charity and gone out of his way to make himself visible for his most important fans — the youth.
In May, he was awarded California's 35th Senate District's Generational Icon award for his work supporting and motivating the state's youth. Earlier this June he visited a high school class in New Jersey that had been using his album To p---- a Butterfly alongside Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye to teach students about racial prejudice and the challenges involved in finding one's self-worth in a hostile society.
Lamar is constantly seeking ways to use his influence to uplift and inspire. "How can I use it? For better or for worse?" Lamar told MTV. "Money or celebrity, how can I use it? How can I p---- it? Can I p---- it negatively, or can I p---- it in a positive way? Positive for me is showing what I go through, what I've been through ... but that I still love myself at the end of the day."
A new Tupac: Lamar's concern with using his influence and voice to encourage peace and positivity puts him in the same league as his idol, Tupac.
Tupac was also hyper-conscious of the impact of his music and lyrics. Toward the end of his life he was also critical of the way the hip-hop community interpreted the "gangsta" attitude. A year before his death, he told MTV he found it tremendously irresponsible when rappers "talk about murder and death and you don't talk about the pain or you talk about killing and robbing and stealing and you don't talk about jail and death and betrayal and all things that go with it." He felt rappers should be doing more to try to "save" their listeners, not glorifying the violence and depravity of the g----banging lifestyle.
Pac's birthday was Tuesday. The fact that two hip-hop's finest storytellers and most inspirational figures were born back-to-back, separated by only 16 years and a day, is as jaw-dropping as coincidences get. We'll see if Kendrick is up to building the same immortal legacy that Tupac did. All indications so far suggest that he will.(This ad goes away when signing up) -
