You've gotta remember that Kendrick wasn't all that huge outside of the rap community when GKMC dropped, so that's not that great of a metric to go by. It wasn't until after it got such good reception that he became a cross-genre success. Most of my friends who are casual rap fans only knew of Swimming Pools and Backseat Freestyle (the latter of which they only knew as "that eiffel tower d-ck song you always play in your car") until I convinced them to download the album.
