Kodak's writing has never been what makes his music though or at least not for me. His writing can stand out at times but it's usually his melodies and charisma that make me love his music. It's catchy and he can connect to listeners in a unique way. He's really someone that raps with emotion and you can sense that whether he's rapping about a woman, his family, the streets, being in jail etc.

P.S. No way in h--- am I putting more life above this or gibb's project. And I like more life quite a bit.

not ruin it, 7-7.5 range is a really good album.

i only tagged you because i originally agreed with you that this might be AOTY, and it's quite short of that.

why are you giving him a pass when he has songs like day for day to open the album? the appeal has been his melody and charisma, sure, but he's a more than capable writer as well. and he consistently falls way short of a bar he sets himself to start the album.

no doubt about this. but no shame in this either, lil big pac is a special project.

this is still a good album, but i'm betting the jail time had some part of his vision for it lost in translation. i didn't even know this was dropping, probably just tried to finesse it together to capitalize on the tunnel vision hype and the fact that his name was in mad headlines the past few weeks.

when i saw the snippets and the making of leading up to his next project, i thought it would be a classic.

re-visiting this and letting it live for a week, i'm kind of disappointed since i'm a p big kodak fan.

I'm not. His more vulgar lyrics tend to be cringe worthy I agree. He's been delivering lyrics like "baby girl, that p---- wetter than chicken noodle soup" since the beginning though. I can overlook it if it's delivered within a melody though tbh. If it's a stand alone line that's meant to be witty or something ("p---- bald like calliou") that's when I really cringe because that adds no value. It's not catchy or witty, it's just poor writing.

As for "side n-----" I have no issue with the writing at all. Maybe because you're older it comes off as corny? I mean Kodak is only what? 19 or 20? So he's still practically a kid. That comes with the immature state of mind of dealing with an ex that's moved on ("crop him out the frame"). Again though, I love the song because of the melody. It's catchy and you can sense it's personal. Definitely not a song I would go quoting lyrics from though.

my point is that he's capable of more. whether or not he's been doing this from the start is irrelevant to what i'm trying to say. he's still a growth artist, probably will be until 24 or 25. not to say artists follow trajectories, but he's got a lot of unpolished elements to his repertoire that i see coming along and improving. his writing is one of them.

and he did take a step at moments on this album, but it almost seems like a net negative gain all things considered. that's where my disappointment stems.

to me, he could be a generational talent because of his grasp on delivery, style, and melody. i agree with most of what you said, but i think the difference in our reception is proportionate to our difference in expectations for him.

and side n----- is a beta anthem about discontent of being in second place. but there is absolutely no depth to the story or situation beyond that, which is why i don't like it. his verses are there for the sake of having verses, he takes 16 bars to softly convey his point - twice.

he tries to mirror the two verses and bring it full circle, but all he does is repeat (very thin) content twice. the execution is terrible.

i still wouldn't skip the song because the hook and melody are dope, but this isn't a good song.

@Enigma i guess you already got my gripes with side n-----, but i was just listening to piƱata and this song came on:

    freddie gibbs - deeper

Five years later, why you callin up my phone now?
(Phone now) Uh... Well b----, how you get the number?
Like every other month I'm switchin up that MFer
Back on the bus I used to finger-f--- her singin Usher
Down on my luck and then she upped and left me for a sucka
I reminisce on all the crazy s--- we did
You and me forever, s--- we say when we was kids
She said, "I'm havin problems and I pray that he forgive
when he find out the baby ain't his", that cut a n----- deep

    versus Side n-----.

@Mike Tyson Side n----- is the song I would cut off the album no doubt.

Lil Big Pac is amazing but sonically I much prefer Painting Pictures even if the writing is worse. I'd have to compare the writing side by side on those though tbh. I just think melody-wise, beat-wise, the cohesiveness, and the structure is something else. It makes me keep coming back.

The only song that makes me go :what22: lyrics-wise is Up in Here cuz he keeps comparing p---- to top ramen and macaroni and cheese and s---.

Yeah, there's no doubt that he has places where he can grow. I don't really take into context artist potential when listening to an album, I just take it at face value so I think that's where our differences do stem from. I brought up that he's been using vulgar lyrics from the beginning because I don't think that's something that's ever going to go away. I often compare Kodak to Boosie because they have very similar traits. Boosie has been making music for years and he never grew out of the vulgar sex lyrics that we often hear from Kodak or the homophobic lyrics that I referenced in another post. It's honestly a culture thing I think.

The setting that was painted in my head when I heard Side n----- was Kodak drunk (and probably under other substances) sitting at a table in distress rambling about his feelings of a girl who didn't choose him. The repetitiveness of the song helped me paint this picture because that's often what heartbroken drunks do. They ramble, repeat themselves and have emotional outbursts which is exactly what this song is. Now I'm not saying Kodak was aiming for this but that's what I got from it and why I think the song works.

Gibb's is a much more polished writer than Kodak (age and experience def plays a factor in this as well). I think we both agreed on that in another thread. Deeper obviously displays more in-depth writing and is the better song because of that. I think both songs work in different ways though.

I like More Life a lot, but this is definitely better than More Life IMO.

I'm not here to argue though. Just wanna hear more of your thoughts tbh.

Pretty much posted them all in the previous posts.

This album has a lot of holes. More Life, despite being longer, has hardly any.

But I'm interested in hearing why you think this is "definitely" better.

I think More Life could've been 16 songs instead of 22. There's songs such as the Jorja Interlude, Madiba Riddim, and Glow that I just can't f--- with. I think it's a strong project.. as a matter of fact, one of his best, but I think Kodak's is better.

Like I said, I really like more life, but Painting Pictures is incredible to me. There might be one song that I dislike. (ironically, it's the Thugger song)

And it's not like this is the deal breaker for me or anything, but Kodak is a much better songwriter IMO. Painting Pictures is a fitting title because he's literally doing that with his lyrics through 90% of the album. I don't wanna sound like a fa---- Eminem stan that only cares about lyrics, but his lyrics are what stand out the most to me.

And I know this doesn't make it better or worse in any way, but I appreciate the fact that Kodak did almost all of the rapping on his project and let the features stick to the hooks. I've always thought it was cool when rappers have less features on their projects. (e.g. J Cole)

I guess I shouldn't have said definitely because it's closer than I originally had thought. I'm sticking to my opinion though and I still f--- with More Life a lot.

Haven't heard it yet, but it's lyrically worse than Lil Big Pac? That's too bad because I was looking forward to this.
