    Fellini's Casanova (1976)

From Bela Lugosi's lost drama to Heath Ledger's repressed comedy, Casanova's memoir has been put to film many ways, none so contemptuous as Fellini's.

Separating man from myth, the Italian auteur explores the insecurity and self-delusion of the famed womanizer as portrayed convincingly by Donald Sutherland. The film's chief concern lay with ego, its roots in empty sexual conquest and fabricated masculinity. The exaggerated set design transforms the period into a fever dream complimentary of the vibrant wardrobe. From its black plastic oceans to its mechanized lover, Fellini's Casanova is a colorful, almost mystical, odyssey on the back of Sutherland's layered performance. 3/4

I had to get back into the 40s/50s noir mindstate so the dense dialogue felt kind of robotic and overkill to me for a bit, but the second half really takes off. That tight little scene at the Sterling Club where he goes in the backdoor, knocks the phone away, knocks out the manager, grabs the papers, and walks out is so perfect.

As far as detective noir goes, it's a 5/5, but I really prefer some of the other takes on the genre with politics and media (The Sweet Smell Of Success, Ace in the Hole). Not a huge fan of Double Indemnity either. I prefer lots of Wilder movies over it.

I usually seek out movies that I think I will like. Were I to be less picky, I'm sure there would be lots of lower ratings and less hearts. I found almost all of those experiences enjoyable to varying degrees. I suppose I use it like the Tomatometer. Take Inside (2007) for instance: I find the whole premise of transgressive art juvenile and lazy, but I loved how brilliant the gore was. So I guess I "hate" the film, but salvaged enough from it to enjoy myself.

I try to let my ratings reflect how much I enjoy something as well as my "objective assessment" as I kind of hate rating movies numerically in the first place. My mind doesn't work that way. My 5/5's aren't "masterpieces" or "clas

Also, I visited AestheticsoftheMind for the first time. Love your writing despite the fact it's never about films that I've seen. A lot more formal and scholarly than the stuff I usually read by Ebert, Rosenbaum, Canby etc. Will be digging through your 5 star list eventually.

Kinda cringe storyline and "meh" acting.. but it was entertaining at times.. especially the last scenes and twists. 6/10
