A Most Violent Year: Great acting and cinematography. It really felt like a NYC Winter in the 80's. Oscar and Jessica's performances were fantastic and believable. My main problem with the film though was that it was sort of boring. It's a morality tale about trying to avoid plunging into criminal life despite being surrounded by criminals everywhere you turn. It's an interesting concept but can be kind of dull. Granted, in that regard it is sort of unique. Films like Godfather 3 or Carlito's Way, the attempts by the protagonists to go legitimate usually fail and escalate into major bloodshed (mostly because they were actually criminals in their younger years). If you like Oscar Isaac, Jessica Chastain, I'd recommend it. If you like morality driven dramas, I'd recommend it. However, if you're expecting a violent, gangster drama, you'll be disappointed. 7/10

Have yet to see A Most Violent Year, I like morality driven drama's but I expected it to be more of a 'gangster' movie tbh.

Anyway, last movie I've seen was Trading Places. The idea is pretty simple but executed so well. Both leads are fantastic and I think back about those 2 homeless guys in Coming To America being the Duke's. Also Jamie Lee did a great job. Not the first time I saw it tho, seen it years ago. 9/10

Southpaw: Jake's performance was the best part of the film. Forest was good too but his character wasn't developed well. The stereotypical, gruff trainer has been done before and better. I was more interested in his background. Also, Hope's financial descent in the movie seemed to happen a bit too fast. I know a lot of athletes have financial problems but this guy was apparently broke when he was on top of the world? I just didn't buy that. I did like the way the fight scenes were shot. Those matches looked like actual PPV matches. Overall, the script could have been better. 6.5/10

So strange and surreal, cold, awkward, empty, yet so impressionistic and powerful beyond its means. Fassbinder's restraint and boorishly controlling nature makes it tough to watch but hard to forget.

      91/100 - Amazing.

Lacking real development, the film sort of just escalates from one plot point to the next. The performances are great.

      63/100 - Decent.

[REVIEW] 66/100 - Youth (Paolo Sorrentino, Italy)

As levity overcomes meaning and the film comes to an unearned closure, viewers might feel tricked by Youth’s self-flattering nature, an undeserved egotism that fails to match the film’s worth.

Lots of characters you don't care about. Exposition as a crutch. No sense of time. Probably a pretty good book. Only a competent movie. Very safe. The problems are predictable, but it's fun to watch the solutions unfold even if you know this isn't the type of movie to end badly. 3/5

    Better.

Interstellar was interesting. It had some cool physics going on. Really pulled together in the end. But it was freaking long, got slow and just overall I wouldn't watch it again.

The Martian on the other hand was very enjoyable and I'd love to watch it again. When you're watching it you will be like oh wow that's neat or think Damon's character is the smartest guy ever but it just holds your attention and is intriguing. Not a dull moment, unlike Interstellar in my opinion which had me looking at my watch the last 45 mins or so of it. I could appreciate the physics and everything of interstellar it was just dull to me.

Well just based off this we both had very different Interstellar experiences

The length didn't bother me either time I saw it

True, I mean it was interesting. I understood what was going on. The physics definitely delved into a bit deeper than the average Joe and such. But idk, maybe it just didn't get me. My friend loved it, a few others thought it was ok. I suppose it's all how you take it in.

Maybe you won't like The Martian :ehh:

    The Big Short

I liked it, but I honestly hated the directing from literally the first frame lol. Just the way it was edited, the crutches they used throughout the story, the camera work, everything got on my nerves. I got what they were trying to do, but it only even slightly worked because of the cast. Steve Carrell carried the film for me, tbh

it was still interesting enough though, and i feel like i learned something lmao so there's that

MM is just such an incredible actor. one of my favorites rn. i just loved the experience, despite flaws i could nitpick. usually im all for focusing on the nitpicking and letting it bring down a film for me lol (like i did with, say, TDKR) but it was just an exhilarating experience for tbh
