    Queen of Earth (2015)

I could k--- you right now and no one would ever know. :)

Mental illness is a terror as potent as any evil spirit when put in the right hands. Alex Ross Perry happens to agree, taking the Kubrick challenge by setting his manic horror in a brightly lit vacation getaway. While there aren't any axe murderers or elevators full of blood, Queen of Earth is a masterclass in sustaining a level of tension that average genre horrors should be jealous of. A noise can startle, but a stretch of silence can exhaust you. A killing is brutal, but the threat of a killing is torturous. Restraint is a virtue. 4/5

    The Visit (2015)

    M. Night is back, b------s. Sure, there's a twist of sorts and the little brother's arc is very similar to Joaquin Phoenix's from Signs, but this is a good stuff. Found footage horror and the Blumhouse distribution might test your gag reflexes historically, but this is a ringer. The movie is at least self aware enough about the pseudo documentary style to have the girl act as a sort of mouthpiece for the director in a tongue in cheek way. Stuff like the hide-n-seek segment really took advantage of the POV in a scary and interesting way. The mains are likeable and feel like real kids instead of a 50 year old Indian guy writing lines for two Hollywood brats. I was very impressed by just how dark it gets. I wasn't expecting that at all.

Sure, I guessed the reveal early on. Sure, I hated the rap subplot. Those few gripes didn't dampen my overall experience. I feared that M. Night was getting patronized for making something passable after all of these years, but my worries are gone. Let the Shyamalaissance begin. 4/5

I thought it was very clever the way M Night threw in a second reveal. After realizing these were escaped mental patients, he leaves the fate of the real grandparents in the air. He even uses the s-----y diapers as a red herring to make you think they might be alive. The moment the grandpa s----s himself during Yatzee, you realize they're dead a few moments before the teenage girl. Pretty cool. I imagine a lot of people caught that, but it's worth pointing out anyway.

    Hateful 8

had a great time, was a good movie-going experience, but definitely in the bottom tier of Tarantino films. that being said, i wasnt disappointed or anything like TimmyT. The scene before the intermission, the Channing Tatum scene, and the humor throughout had me leaving satisfied for sure

I didn't like any of that, but I had a decent time regardless. It's definitely an interesting addition to Tarantino's catalog. That's for sure.

That makes a little more sense. Especially if a director is in house. Doing it during the movie is corny and dumb.

I physically cringed at those scenes. But otherwise I genuinely enjoyed it.
