Yea, that's basically it. The crowds at festivals are generally more 'sophisticated' as well, with a lot more cinephiles/serious film watcher/mature people, and they tend to actually applaud and let the credits play out. At TIFF you get a lot of audience response, and apparently at Cannes it's very serious whether a film gets applause/boos/standing ovation cause s--- is real. My lasting standing ovation was for Mommy last year, but not a whole lot of people joined. 12 Years A Slave at TIFF got a standing ovation for both screenings I attended, the second of which was a free screening as it was the peoples choice award (top prize) winner of TIFF. It makes for a better experience when you see with an audience. I missed the Hateful Eight tonight (see other thread for why) and I'm kind glad cause it had an audience of young vultures fighting to get in to fanboy the s--- out of it. pushing people, getting their popcorn combos, drinking or blazing beforehand and just being d----s in the audience. Hate that kinda s--- and it's the reason I usually wait a few weeks to see a major film then I go during a weekday matinee. Then there's theaters like our cinematheque where I can go to a chill evening screening, have a night out, take a date or a friend or whatever, and actually enjoy that feel of going out. I don't get how people can enjoy going out when its an opening day blockbuster s--- film and crowded with immature goons and fanboys munching their popcorn and talking throughout.

    Just watched the Martian (@Clive)

I really dug it for what it was, Damon was great. Watched it with my family which was also a plus. Obviously it doesn't leave me grappling with the meaning of existence or anything like Interstellar, and it seems like pure nasa propaganda, but there was just somethin about its spunk I loved haha. Basically knew nothing really bad was gonna happen the whole time, but I still enjoyed the ride. Pure entertainment, I'm not mad at the people who love it

Not about to watch it again right away like with Interstellar tho, but wouldn't be mad if I was forced to watch it again at some point down the line u digg? Nothing I really hated about it, but that's mainly because once I got a grip for the film's tone I stopped excepting something profound to happen

Capra's most charming film. My favourite Christmas movie, because it always makes me happy. Well scripted and shot as well, with a number of motifs and visual artistry.

      97/100 - Masterful.

(This year unfortunately split into two parts, Christmas eve and yesterday, the 28th)

An utterly captivating adventure story replete with innuendo, romance, thrills, slapstick, and a double agent.

      94/100 - Amazing.

      ★★★★★ Rewatched 28 Dec, 2015

A brilliant use of light and shadow, interior and exterior, to channel the inner plight of its morally ambiguous lead characters. A psychological tour de force with great entertainment value and sensitively placed levity. It's only crutch is both its inherent and blatant racism.

      94/100 - Amazing.

(Finally caved and raised the film to a 5 star rating)

The eggcrate & shadow is magnificent, as is light on the woman's body. But there is a lack of harmony or rhythm between each episode.

      75/100 - Very Good.

Emotional affirmation is the last thing that I expected from a Nolan epic.
Love is the real spectacle here. 4/5

The narrative is clunky, but it's the most genuine emotional core that Nolan has ever had. The world building and score are top notch. That stretch where he intercuts the docking with the fire is monumental. It's certainly uneven, but its highs totally eclipse The Martian.

no i wasnt - i was making a rhetorical point not actually saying interstellar is derivative.

edit - i guess i disliked interstellar for the same reasons i did hateful eight.. both are kinda of their filmmakers at their most indulgent. if ur a big fan, maybe it works for u, fine. for me, i prefer his smaller scale stuff. tdkr didnt work, inception was about the breaking point. its not about dogme 95 or whatever point you were trying to make lol
