Aguirre: The Wrath of God (1972)

The tranquility of nature devours a group of conquistadors deluded by grandeur. Herzog's restraint is a thing to behold, stripping his film of cheap affectation. Klaus Kinksi emotes with the prowess of a silent era star. One of the greatest opening shots of all time. 9/10

Woody Allen used to be funny?! A fun little experiment in the screenwriter as the auteur. There are some quality jokes here. Overall, a goofy and light experience. 6/10

    Mistress America (2015)

Mistress America is a spirited coming of age picture that manages to capture the beginning and end of that journey. Baumbach and Gershwig continue to understand youth culture and do interesting things with it. They make picking a movie to watch with the girlfriend so much easier. 7/10

    Illumination (1973)

The ascent to 30 told in a scrap book-like structure, Zanussi's picture has the reach but not the grasp. This search for meaning is too scatter brained. While the scientific angle is handled very effectively, the attempts at family and religion aren't as convincing. These aspects of the film feel obligatory as opposed to inspired and the short run time doesn't let them breathe appropriately. Not to mention that they are handled much the same way as their factual counterpart in an almost clinical manner. Thusly Illumination approaches the existential question asymptotically, too ambitious for its own good. Still, this might be the closest I ever come to watching John Williams' Stoner adapted for the screen. That's something. 6/10

    Cries and Whispers (1972) ★★★★★
    [IMG]

Red. The color of love, anger, and pain all buried under a puritanical facade, bubbling and volatile. Bergman's Cries and Whispers is repressive chamber drama masterfully executed.

    Trainwreck (2015) ★★★☆☆

Apatow helps Amy Schumer bring her stage persona to life. He's still afraid to k--- his darlings or at least hire somebody to do it for him, but I can deal with 15 minutes of overkill and dubbing every possible joke into the final cut. That's his signature at this point and in the comedic movie drought thanks to television, it's kind of grown on me. I'd like to see him launch more talent this way. I wouldn't mind seeing the Jesselnik equivalent of this sometime in the future.

    The General (1926) ★★★★☆
    [IMG]

This was my introduction to the legendary Buster Keaton and it did not disappoint. While I'm always wary that comedy will age like milk, this is fine wine. His knack for physical high jinks is universal. I really enjoyed myself though it runs out of steam a bit in the final act.

Kurosawa's fable is a milestone in nonlinear story telling that explores the fragility of truth. The assist from Miyagawa on the camera and Hayasaka laying the score make it a technical masterpiece, elevating a rather simple story into a spectacle. While this is my favorite Kurosawa picture yet, I can't help but to feel that the universality of his stories prevent me from connecting with them on a personal level.

Concussion - I really liked it. There was an odd thing that occurred 30 mins into the movie.... A guy and girl came in late to view the movie. After 30 mins the guy stood up and yelled BULL s---! GOD BLESS THE NFL! and he and the girl left. Lol weird.

    Turbo Kid

Did a rewatch of this the other day after getting a steelbook copy. Definitely one of my favorite films of 2015.The homage to the 80's was awesome and it was just really easy to sit and watch. The silly amounts of gore and blood was really great and the overall vibe is really comfy. Definitely check it out if you're a fan of cheesy 80's films.

GO READ. ON GEOMETRY. (included in readings is my first year review and fourth year 5000 word thesis/style paper on the film/Martin Ritt's The Outrage). To be fair, Rashomon, a former 'favourite film of all time' (I've had four: The Butterfly Effect, Memento, Rashomon, Mirror, which is funny cause they didn't drop to 4, 3, 2, 1, but like 200, 100, 20, 1 or something like that, due to the stages I have sort of 'surpassed' in film exploration) is a bit one-pointed and affected, and I wonder how I would have felt had it been shown to me after having already explored other works from Kurosawa, Mizoguchi, etc. I'm definitely personally biased towards it, but I'm fairly certain its a bonafide masterpiece.

It's certainly a masterpiece. I can see why it's held in high regard. I honestly thought Ikiru was a bad movie... this one just didn't do much for me. I didn't leave with very much, though I respect the talent behind it immensely. Last year, next year, who knows. Maybe I'm just in the mood for some Teshigahara.

Besides, I often change my ratings in retrospect. I might feel differently after I sleep on it.
