    Southpaw

highly emotional movie. maybe even too much at certain points. it's not the best boxing movie i've seen, but certainly not the worst. the ending is very predictable, which i don't like. but overall, its a solid movie and definitely worth a watch.

I haven't watched any movies this week but I have seen Star Wars VII. It was good, old fashioned fun but I don't know if it stands on it's own.

I saw this movie before, but i was only like 6-7 years old, & i didn't understand s---, so i decided to give this another look-see.

The plot/storyline is super interesting, kept me engaged, i was glued to the g.d. screen.

It's an incredibly emotive movie, it's d--- good at evoking feeling. I actually felt attached to the characters, and really hated the evil ones (they are incredibly hateable). When it comes to drama, this movie succeeds.

If i'd rank it, i'd give it a 10/10. Incredible piece of work.

    Manderlay (2005) ★★★★☆
    [IMG]

Manderlay falters in that it is a political experiment outright where as Dogville began as a more typical drama and slowly chipped away at its roots in traditionalism. It also suffers from being the middle picture which ends on a cliffhanger in a trilogy that never was. Bar those two shortcomings, it is certainly a poignant statement on race in America that only an outsider like Trier would have the nerve to present so bluntly. A quite abrasive affront to liberalism and an excellent retort to the many incarnations of the white-person-saves-the-day narrative.

    Breaking the Waves (1996) ★★★★☆
    [IMG]

Trier at his sweetest and funniest makes his habit of enlightenment through suffering, often for the audience as much as the characters, all the more devastating. The scenes in the church alone cement Emily Watson's performance as one of the best Trier has ever captured which is quite the compliment.

Trial on the Road (1971) ★★★☆☆
    [IMG]

My second tour through the apocalyptic mind of Aleksei German, Trial on the Road is a trek through Soviet snowscapes filled with gutsy criticism and dotted by visionary craft, however suffers from romance and propaganda overcoming narrative sensibility.

    The Pest (1997) ★☆☆☆☆
    [IMG]

    Aggressively bad. Highly recommended.

      Knight of Cups 2015
      ★★★★½ Watched 12 Jan, 2016

[REVIEW] 85/100 - Knight of Cups (Malick, 2015/2016)

Easily Malick’s most impenetrable film, as well as perhaps his most visually breathtaking. The subject matter is rather scattered, with little of a sense of grounding in the lead character’s life. Instead it uses poetic devices and artful cinematography to engage the viewer with a fleeting glimpse into a life. It borders between genius and superficial, creating most often a mass ornament of female bodies and the ‘high-life’.

All in all, the film’s poetic nature makes it more akin to a musical symphony than to cinema proper, and as such, I presume that it requires viewing multiple times for one to become in tune with the formal changes, motifs, and rhythms.

Hilarious, insightful, mind-bending, short and sweet. layers upon layers of depth is found in its simplicity.

Though its episodic structure feels unhinged at times, its emotive strengths and superb lead make for a riveting experience.

      Latin Lover 2015
      ★★ Watched 08 Jan, 2016

Trivial, melodramatic, and full of cheeky, self-congratulating plot turns. A character drama with forgettable dialogue.

      55/100 - Mediocre.

A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence 2014
      ★★★ Watched 07 Jan, 2016

Constructs a dry existential tone to convey the psychological malaise of living. Not particularly funny nor philosophical, though it has some superb framing and a couple moments of humour. Becomes too self-flattering and locked into its own affectations.

      67/100 - Decent.

      [REVIEW] 89/100 - 88:88 (Isiah Medina, 2015)

"The absence of reason; living without a sense of origin or destination. a meaningless search for finitude: for meaning in the lack of meaning, for structure in a lack of structure; the perennial experience of banality, of repetition. distortion. decay. To become shackled, imprisoned by the image of a life without reason."

    American Sniper

really great performance by bradley cooper. that's the best aspect of this movie. but this film sorta celebrates violence and i'm not sure i agree with that. that said, it's a solid film with a really good performance by the leading actor

i'd give it 7 points out of 10

    Wings of Desire (1987) ★★★☆☆
    [IMG]

What starts as an experimental depiction of our internal world versus or external world and the resulting social distance boils down to a love conquers all fantasy. Any profundity is lost in the long winded definitey of the conclusion.

    http://boxd.it/8azRh

    Mister Lonely (2007) ★★★☆☆
    [IMG]

Korrine humanizes the pop culture mythos in an a relatively tame look at our search for acceptance. His fascination with street performance and oddity, while arguably exploitative in his previous work, is unquestionably endearing here. The most troubling aspect of Mister Lonely is that we aren't allowed to witness the birth of hope without a somber penance in exchange.

Wow, this movie s----d, what an utter turd of a movie. I expected something mentally stimulating not complete oscar bait/kubrick biting. A shame since I enjoyed Badlands, Martin Sheen was great in it.

As essentially a filmed play, it's an interesting exercise. Performances are good, if a tad underwhelming.

    GOODNIGHT MOMMY
This kept my fiance entertained, so I think that says something. Latest addition in the so-called indie-horror subgenre, alongside It Follows and Babadook.

The Peanuts Movie - idk why I watched this lol. That Rotten Tomatoes score was deceptive. Likable but very forgettable.

Brooklyn - This was certainly well done with some nice performances, but was a bit underwhelming for me. I'm not sure why it's garnering near-unanimous praise, probably wouldn't crack my top 10 for the year.

Creed - Exceeded my expectations by a lot. Engaging and at times genuinely moving, this was lightyears better than any Rocky-related movie has any right to be in 2015. Top-notch work from Coogler, Jordan, and Stallone.

    The Machinist.

Great flick. I work in the manufacturing industry and actually sell tooling for the machinery they were working on in the film, so it hit home.
Bale is great in it, hard to look at though.
