At home.. HD versions are available online now, although I sort of wish I waited for Knight of Cups-- it will be glorious in theater

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2011
      ★★ Watched 19 Jan, 2016

Respectable for its sincerity, but so utterly banal, insignificant, and melodramatic.

      53/100 - Mediocre.

      Mistress America 2015
      ★★★ Watched 18 Jan, 2016

A practice in creative writing that succeeds in some literary but no cinematic manners. Fun and at times charming, but pompous with highly stylized/unrealistic though amiable characters. Very good soundtrack.

      74/100 - Good.

      Uncle Yanco 1967
      ★★★★ Watched 18 Jan, 2016

A splice of time, space, city, life. always formally daring and never besides the fundamental endeavor of capturing time.

      80/100 - Great.

      Alpha House 2014
      ★ Watched 17 Jan, 2016

Another perfect film from The Asylum, no doubt. Highly respectable. At least they're aware of their purports to entertain drunk late nighters with raunchy 'almost' pornogrpahy, teen boy wet-dream fantasy, debauchery, and self-parody. It is what it is.

      30/100 - Awful.

      The Big Short 2015
      ★★★ Watched 17 Jan, 2016

Charismatic acting makes up for this sluggishly photographed and TV-like paced process film. An amalgam of styles from WOWS (economy) to The Office (breaking the 4th wall) to American Hustle (fraud) to Ocean's 11 (ensemble).

      73/100 - Good.

      The Conformist 1970
      ★★★★★ Watched 16 Jan, 2016

Masterfully shot and scripted with a keen sense of light/movement and visual storytelling. Nuanced and affecting.

      95/100 - Amazing.

If you haven't seen it, I'd also strongly recommend It's Such a Beautiful Day from Don Hertzfeldt (It's also on Netflix). One of my favorites of the decade.

    Just watched it. Excellent.

Kind of reminded me of anomalisa (which might be a superficial comparison given the contrast between animation and existential dread) @Twan

Glad you liked it! I think that's definitely fair. The key distinction I would say is that Anomalisa's despairing core is around loneliness and relationships whereas It's Such a Beautiful Day, though it shares those aspects, is much more death-haunted.

For sure, and maybe even a tad more surreal in its sensibility.

Watching Armageddon. Has anybody ever realized how unbelievably corny this movie is? Let's make a movie about saving the world from an asteroid but the content will be 90% unfunny comedy. The most unbelievable thing about this movie isn't them landing on a moving asteroid and drilling a hole in it, it's Steve Buscemi being a lady's man.

    the silence of the lambs

very good movie, with exceptional acting, particularly from anthony hopkins. he's so creepy in this, even when he's just talking. jodie foster did a great job as well, and proves that women can act and not just be inserted into movies because of their looks/hotness/sex appeal. this flick also has some exceptional scenes, like the one where lector meets the senator. great, great scene.

ex machina - I'm not blown away by this movie at all. The whole plot was very predictable and I think Under The Skin and Her did the better job at exploring the same subject. The scenography and the acting was very good tho, so it would be not fair to give this less than 7/10.

the hateful eight - I have a lot of problems with this one, but even if I spent 2000 thousands words on why it was one of the worst qt movies ever, It wouldnt change the fact that I enjoyed it... very much. The snow-filled landscapes were so beautiful. It was a real pleasant to my eyes. 6.5/10

The fact that this movie wasn't amazing took several months to process. It had it all, in theory...
