First thing I did was look that up when I finished. Soooo much better. I loved 8 and didn’t get the backlash behind if rly. I know 7 is a rehash but it was a fun rehash and necessary to get people back on board after the prequels imo

now that I watched 9...there are some legit good story beats and set pieces in there (among the dumb ones) but revealing palpatine is alive in the opening crawl??? Wtf. That just threw it all off from the start. It feels almost like 7/8 don’t exist in the world of 9 and it’s a stand-alone movie.

    true grit (1969)

this is a pretty good western. what i enjoyed most about it is how determined the young girl was. no matter what they tried, she didn't let them discourage her from accomplishing her goal of catching the guy who killed her father. i feel like her and john wayne's character shared that trait of never giving up. apparently the coen brothers did a re-make of this movie. normally i'm not a big fan of re-makes, but the coen bros are pretty awesome, so i'd be willing to check it out.

    mortal kombat (1995)

for those of you who haven't heard, there is going to be a re-make of mortal kombat that is coming out next year. but as far as this one goes, its a solid movie. i think they did a good job with the cast. but the dialogue in this movie is lacking--its just not written very well. but its still an enjoyable movie especially if you grew up playing mortal kombat as a kid as i did.

    Dirty Harry (1971)

this is a really, really good thriller/action film. first of all, the acting is excellent. i first got familiar with clint eastwood by watching the dollars trilogy and ever since then it seems like everything i've seen clint in has been awesome, including this. the guy who plays the killer/psychopath deserves more recognition for how convincing he is. its scary how good he is in this role. awesome casting decisions. awesome film. i wonder how good the followups to this more are.

I thought it was really good, but a bit overly kitsch for my liking, which is often with Tarantino. His heavily stylized vision doesn't quite comply with what I look for as great cinema, but I think he has a knack for presenting homage, which is really what stands out for me when watching this. The acting is entertaining and his sense of rhythm maintains one's avid attention. Solid for casual watching but not exactly insightful, so I think it will wear out its novelty, if it hasn't already.

wb sir. i remember you used to analyze like, bresson lol so i smiled to see upon your return you review... this. always felt - like street fighter and mario bros like cheap cynical hollywood cashins not true movies.

anyway i was going to post this on letterbox for @Twan and @Swizz's benefit but since that site is down (!!) here we go:

DC Noir: Oh man, I loved this crime anthology flick, particuarly as its set in the city im in and features locals mostly. If you're a die hard fan of The Wire, this is a must see. Features at least two show alum, plus Black Frankie from the Deuce , both written by George Pelecanos. His short stories are the basis for DC Noir, and after a shaky first segment ironically directed by Pelecanos, we get some authentic and heartbreaking slices of life set in our nation's capitol before the latest wave of gentrification took hold. The last segment 'the confidential informant' might be the best. Oh, and Wale (!!!) plays a villain. Watch it free here: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/ffdcdcnoir/407227698

Convoy: ::Stefon voice:: this movie has everything. The absurdities of Road House mixed with Smokey & The Bandit's hick flick car chase sensibility , mixed with 70s era race relations and class warfare politics and a dash of director Sam Peckinpaw's knack of violence to boot. Kris Kristopherson (!!) plays a truck who becomes an unlikely leader of a working class revolution, complete with lots of CB radio interludes, and an interesting pivot to Christ allegory near the end. A little better than pure 'guilty pleasure' this is definitely a wild Holldwood film you could not see them doing today. Streaming on Amazon

Il Grido by Antonioni. A movie about a man who was just left by the love of his life. He became a so lonely even though he is around people it's painful to watch. I think his feelings, anxiety and jelausy are expressed perfectly, and I love the fact that by no means he was the good guy and the woman was bad, there were no winners in the movie. Saddest I've been since the ghost story, very much recommend it

Finally got to see 1917 last night and it was phenomenal.

Watch with as immersive equipment as you possibly can and you will feel like you’re there. Really amazing cinematography and sound mixing.

Recently watched Good, Bad and the Ugly for the first time, on brother @Swizz's recommendation. Incredible, easily one of the best films of all time - entertaining, epic, vicious. I can see how Eastwood became an icon coming out of this.

Then moved more into a Paul Newman phase. Started with Hud, a classic anti-hero western. If any of you like early Newman, cynical son raging against authority motif, or a movie like Last Picture Show, I highly recommend.
Also watched Harry & Son - wrote/produced/directed by Newman - which s----d lol. You see him moving into his later period 'rascal misfit father' mode, but he does it so so much better in Nobody's Fool. Finally, also watched him in Fat Boy and Little Man, about the development of the atomic bomb. Should've worked so much better than it did. It's fine, but Newman seems asleep.

Also did a rewatch of Best in Show, which was great.
