It was the Marshall Mathers LP but it also wasn't.

Eminem billed this as basically the closest thing you'll get to the MMLP era of Eminem, which had us expecting the controversial, gritty, defiant, rebellious, awe inspiring troubled artist who would completely lash out at everything with poise, and we even hoped he'd have the same musicality and similar concepts that made MMLP revolutionary. We didn't get that.

We got the Marshall Mathers LP, But it was 41 year old Marshall Mathers, completely different in every way. It was where he is now humor wise, life wise, creative wise, whole 9. His biggest mistake was saying how much this album sounds like original MMLP. It really doesn't. I still enjoy the album though, but if you were expecting 28 year old Eminem on this I can see why you were disappointed.

I think the songs are a bigger problem than the title.

I used to think it was his 4th best but now I feel relapse is his fourth best. I feel the mmlp2 has too many pop singers on it

Replace Survival and Stronger than I was with Beautiful Pain and Groundhog Day and it's an 8.5/10. As is I say it's a 7.5/10. It's a solid album with some great tracks, but overall it lacks replay value.

Most people liked it though. It was the first album since TES that was widely accepted by both his core fanbase and the mainstream media. Don't let the people on here fool you.

Yeah, I like this album too, but if people here thinks this album wasn't so good... I've asked what they would change to make it sound better, right?

What went wrong? Execution. s--- was sloppy, incohesive, had lots of stale humor, shock value that fell flat, motivational tracks that felt like recovery leftovers. So much s--- is wrong with it, it's a clusterfuck. Not totally bad ALL around, but still a clusterfuck.

What should've Marshall done to make this album to be as good as people's expectations?
Should've brought in consultants/whatever the f--- they're called that would give their honest input on the project. People that'd speak out if they find something corny or unworthy of being released to the public.

    What would you change?
I'd make the album shorter (12ish tracks), in order to make it more concise. I'd get rid of any tangential tracks that ruin the cohesion, have him make new tracks that stay true to the albums theme & aesthetic. Hmmmm i think that's it.

Do you think album wasn't so huge because of it's name?
I think the album was a let down because it had such a hype inducing name & it ended up not coming anywhere near the original quality wise.

    this is just my opinion

    relapse has better beats
i dont mind the accents or the subject matter at all , it(the accents) helps eminem to bend words so they rhyme
his flow on some songs was insanity
his storytelling was incredible on songs like deja vu , my darling
yea i like evil twin more than any song on relapse but relapse has a lot of gems 10/10 songs like underground,my darling, deja vu,beautiful , be careful what you wish for and some other great songs
relapse doesnt have a song as bad as stronger than i was
some insane technical s--- from eminem , even tho mmlp2 is not far
it was maybe the last time we will hear eminem without being influenced by the label with what to do , hoping it wont happen on the next solo

i am not saying mmlp2 is bad or something , i rate them close just that i like relapse more

Trust me only people on f---ing hip hop forums or the internet in general dont like that album or hatin on it for some stupid reasons.
People in general think this is Ems best project since his return or since the release of TES.

    why ?
i (and i guess u too) know the answer already
≈ 60% of the people on here who are hatin this album just hate it for one reason: to piss Eminem Fans /Stans off, sad but true.
≈ 20% hate it because its called MMLP2
& ≈ 20% because they really dont like the album for some reasons and iam fine with that.

This pretty much sums up what I said @rapmusik

'People hate it' or 'people say it's his best since his return'.. for the record best since his return isn't a weird thing to say, since all of them are average at best and have different reasons to like or dislike them.
