I've said this many times here but I'll say it again: there's lots of different styles of writing. There's value in James Joyce's Ulysses and there's value in Stephen Kings It. King isn't doing anything insane from literary standpoint, but that doesn't make him a bad writer. The same is true for rap — you might prefer one writing style over another, but that doesn't mean the other is bad or doesn't have value.
Regardless if you focus on lyrics alone with music you're leaving out a huge part of the equation in terms of why people listen to music. Youngboy is super versatile in terms of his flow/cadence/delivery/etc and the varied energy he brings to the table. He's extremely good at conveying emotion through his voice, and he has songs that are well written as well. All of that combined I think this is a great depiction of addiction struggles:
[Chorus]
Wanna take it all back to where it started
Life of the party
Right where my heart at
Soon as what I want come in, I say anything goes
[Verse 1]
On the road, cool, ridin' 'round with the top down
Nowhere to go to, decide that I'll just ride 'round
She a drug abuser from a broken heart, oh, oh
Got a bad addiction, I been druggin' hard all month long
I'm in that Wraith, I ain't got nothin' but some residue on me
I'm chasin' a check to the morning
I'm in the trenches with smokers and steppers and loners
Somethin' more than one Schedule II on me
Matter fact, just a convicted felon, I'm keepin' my weapon
I'm pourin' more blood on that money
Owe it all to the youngin who feel that he owe the ones
Put addiction 'fore hunger
I ain't got no peak, leave blood inside the streets
Used to wash my clothes inside the sink, now a young n----- walk on mink
Takin' care of my dawg, made myself a boss, they gon' take one off, he blink
'Fore a n----- had fame, I was sittin' in a cell, young n----- takin' off them links
She gon' play with her nose all night
s---t three doses 'fore the night end
Lipstick bottle full of white, I know
Told her that I like it, I like it
These n----s, they talk too much, can't tell what I did, I did
I always been there for you, you don't even excite me
I don't necessarily expect you to like the song based upon your taste, but I think it's being closed-minded if you can't see any value in it or why someone else would like it. Rap doesn't have to sound like any one specific thing, nor does hip-hop or any other genre. There's tons of music I don't like that I 100% see the value in. I don't care at all how many syllables someone can rhyme if the song doesn't sound good to me, but I understand why people think that's cool.
Regardless, a lot of trap/g--- narratives aren't real and are just for entertainment as well. They're works of fiction. But whether or not the exact stories are true, a lot of them are reflective of a reality many people have lived. I'm not trying to be a d-ck when I say this but frankly I don't really understand why you'd like rap in the first place if you think this way about music like that considering how much of rap has to do with the struggles of poor people, em included.Ordinary Joel, CSW and Ripper Roo like this. -

I thought this year has been pretty good so far, but now that I think of it all my favourite albums this year are from artists who came out pre 2015
I'm an album guy but streaming services ruined rap albums imo. Most new rappers don't give a f--- about putting a good album out, they make 20+ album songs purely to achieve streaming numbers. Lil Baby is great example. Meant to be one of the best rappers in the game, dropping trash over bloated albums. This what happens when it's all about the money and being a good artists is less important. I think in the long run it's a bad strategy. Only so long you can stay in the game dropping trash before they forgot about you.Last edited: Oct 20, 2022Ordinary Joel, Mikey and DKC like this. -

It's a mixed bunch. And quite frankly, with that amount of new music there is nowadays there's just gotta be something for someone.
I love the old music but I'll forever be checking for new stuff.
