Agreed. It’s like we’re seeing the reverse of the “real hip-hop” crowd. Now, it’s the future/Drake etc. fandoms trying to clown rap artists for trying to make non-turn up music. That’s why I think over emphasizing on “replay value” is silly. Like obviously it’s okay to take it into consideration but replay value isn’t everything. Not every album is meant to be played casually or even age with the times. Some albums are just time stamps in history for that particular moment in time. That’s okay.

Why expect more? He was gone for 4-5 years, which is an eternity in the social media age. It didn't have any viral singles and it wasn't a radio friendly album. Those are good numbers for what it is.

I'm still someone who puts on full albums 75% of the time. That's what's cool about vinyl to me is that it encourages the full album experience. I don't necessarily agree this album has to be sat down with and paid close attention to 100% of the time to enjoy it though. It's certainly worth sitting down with and reading along with the lyrics at least once, but for me most albums are. I do agree that it was crafted with the full album experience in mind, which I think is true for all of his albums really. Doesn't mean you can't slide some songs into a playlist tho. I'm largely an album person but I don't think all music has to be that.

I’m actually not a big fan of Real, easily the weakest off of GKMC but still Real > No Makeup all f---ing day.

How Much a Dollar Cost is dope tho. It’s just a parable designed to allow the spiritual tropes to be explored deeper by showing a contrast from the Lucifer character driving the main narrative. Showing how there’s a real life contradiction between what he preaches & how he acts. Beat’s godly too.

I’m confused at the hate for it.

also it's nice to finally see people acknowledging that kendrick has always had some goofy/corny/overwrought songs on his albums like No Make Up, Real, How Much a Dollar Cost, etc. where he's on some freshman poetry slam s---

tbh outside of the stans/other freaks that inevitably show up for any artist this big no matter how good or bad an album is, I feel like the discourse surrounding this album has been some of the most reasonable and nuanced discussion about a major label album in a long time. I've read a lot of great articles for it that are very balanced in both their praises and their criticism. I like the album, but it's still deeply flawed and I really have appreciated fair assessments from critics (aside from the weirdos who dropped a review giving it 5 stars less than 24 hours after it came out)

N95 and Father Time are my favorites after a couple of listens

I still can't get through Disc 2 after the first listen on release day and I've tried

I prefer d--- and GKMC honestly, let's just not fall into the whole "Either complete trash or undeniable classic" bs, why can't an album just be ok?

48 hours is enough to form an opinion. It’s defo not a classic and it’s far from the worst album ever.

It’s just…meh. And for a Kendrick album, that’s a problem. I mean, Silent Hill is straight trash
