Aug 7, 2021 listened to this once shook my head in disbelief and then went and kicked my dads heed in. thanks Marshall
Aug 7, 2021 To this day I still don't know why Em went so fcking hard on a track with Nicki Minaj of all people. Dope af anyway.
Aug 7, 2021 huge fax. I really wasn't a fan of how Mike mixed Recovery (vocal wise, but i guess part of that was his multi-layered shouting delivery) and most stuff he did up until Revival, lots of compression, but the mixing deffo got better from kamikaze onwards. All recorded on a Sony c800g aswell I believe. Still miss the classic analogue smoothness of when he was recording with the Bass Brothers which peaked in 2000-2002 tho, especially the ones that where mixed by Dre. MMLP is Eminems best album sonically speaking for me, the vocals are amazing and the Mastering is perfect., Who even mastered MMLP was it that Big Bass guy
Aug 7, 2021 this is probably the truth with most hardcore fandoms. my sister is one of those hardcore k pop fans, and when her group releases new music she is constantly hating or disappointed with it at first, but is still listening to it nonstop for whatever reason. Then after a few days shes doing a complete 180 and pretending like this is the hottest song she ever heard.
Aug 7, 2021 f---ing classic. That beat switch part with the lyrics/flow will go down as some classic bars.
Aug 7, 2021 With all the awesome daw's and plugins, it's not even a requirement to spend a lot of money to get good mixes. Grimes mixed her hit songs solely in Garage Band. By contrast, Em has a million dollars worth of studio gear and lots of industry connections, and his mixes often aren't great.
Aug 7, 2021 You make a lot of a good points. I guess maybe this style of rap isn't for me. For Em, it's purely about syllables and metaphors. He's not as concerned about how it sounds musically or what it's saying.
Aug 8, 2021 Yup, brian still does all of his mastering to this day. Yeah recovery issue was definitely the shouting and layered vocals. But one thing I'm learning in general is that pretty much most modern vocals are over compressed now days. It's usually tracked with atleast-1 to 2db gain reduction and then some serial compression after the corrective eq both doing another 1-4 DB gain reduction. Theres almost no dynamic range in hip hop and pop vocals anymore. Lotta upward compression now too which is kind of fun to utilize. I'd k--- to see how dre gets his warmth and depth from the SSL, derek ali does some good work with it as well, but Dre has to be doing something unique with his routing and printing. Maybe even having the prints go back through the SSL. Idk, I'm sure his Patch bay set up is f---ing nuts lol.
Aug 8, 2021 Right. For me I love it bc I'm a huge fan of battle rap and have been since about 06/07. To me, hes taken that type of writing and deliveries and found how to put it to beats, which is not an easy thing to do. But yeah as far as his scheme structure ....I think people get so used to the analogy, or the punchline being the focus to the bar. For most artist they have some statements that lead up to a punchline. Em kinda abandoned the statements and casual lines and just uses analogies and doubles throughout the scheme. When he did Wayne's podcast he mentioned something about that, he was like " you understand, every lines gotta be a punch"
Aug 8, 2021 I work in pro tools and I have 2 full subscriptions to slate and Ik multimedia and bought alot of other plug ins, and yeah you're right you dont need the analogue gear for sure, but it is a sound you cant fully replicate. I like an analogue/digital hybrid set up I think that's the best of both worlds. I think analogue tracking is the best way to go for sure though. Tracking with some tube saturation gentle compression and slight EQ. Whole different game for vocals. When I finally started to be able to record with a tube channel strip it changed alot of things for me. But you're right though, DAW doesnt matter and neither does gear, just how you use it and whatever achieves the sound you're looking for.
Aug 8, 2021 I'd prob rate it a 5. Maybe a 6. Cons: Too fast at the beginning A whole rhyme piece with Christmas references, wtf? Too long Flow is questionable Pros It got better at the end. Seriously, just chopping the first 50% of this verse would've pushed it up to a 7 or 8.
Aug 8, 2021 I liked the part where the beat changed. Like someone said before he could just have a smaller verse lol
Aug 8, 2021 Yeah I dont get the hate for that verse tbh. I just cant stand that corny boom changalalala. Ruins the whole vibe lol
