Mar 2, 2015 I want to say this is fact but in 30 years I'll be biting my words lol. Currently the generation gap has extremely different tastes in music, movies, etc. in the entertainment world & while seeing people respond to "old people" criticizing Kanye's All Day performance, this topic started interesting me. So what is it? Once you get to your 50s, do your entertainment views get stuck in the old man's hangouts or will your opinion have more weight than the current gen of 50+ people who really don't get the business today?
Mar 8, 2015 yeah, i hate going on youtube and seeing all these kids born in the late 90's complaining about how they were born in the wrong generation. s--- is so cliche, its better being in the one we are now since we have access to about anything
Mar 8, 2015 This. There's a site somewhere my friend showed me that had quotes from famous people from different era's all saying different things along the lines of "this new generation sux, mines better" Do believe that there's something more to this current generation though. Take for example myself, I had a computer at an early age - they've been around as long as I can remember. Not only that, but the internet exists and I also grew up with that. I think a lot of people on average would be smarter by default. All the information in the world is accessible at the click of a few buttons. No previous generation had that. I guess you could argue they spent more time reading books, but hey, imo the internet is still vastly larger and easier to access. Edit: just to add to this. Also think younger people will gravitate towards more upbeat/fast paced songs, where as older people would prefer slower paced, peaceful songs.
Mar 27, 2015 im gonna have great taste my entire life casue im not a close minded fakket most elders grew up in a much more ignorant era, just in general.
Mar 27, 2015 Sometimes I wish I was born before the industrial revolution just for comparison's sake. The digital age is kind of overwhelming at times. Even just the 70s and having to buy vinyl and use a land line would be different enough. That said, I listen to way more old stuff than new stuff. Such a wide variety. Can't limit myself to the present.
Mar 27, 2015 it's overwhelming to the point of driving a lot of our generation to complacency. we're used to instant gratification. this manifests it self in so many negative ways in our day to day...from not having the attention span for an album that takes multiple spins to get into, to not branching out to other genres of music because everything thats ever existed in the genre youre already predisposed to like is available to you.
Mar 27, 2015 First off i think this is a great thread, different eras will always have different opinions and views and i think it's worth discussing, As for the discussion, i think growing and discovering yourself through different avenues including music will always give you a certain bias through nostalgia and experience, so, so called 'old people' will never be able to relate to, for example, kanye's music the same way they connected to their own music, this doesn't necessarily mean they have a lesser understanding of music to us, or that they misunderstand the message/meaning, more so they just can't connect to it like we can, though i think that just like there are ignorant and somewhat uninformed people in our generation there are the same in the older generations and they will automatically dismiss music like this without any concern My grandad for example has spent a lot of his life listening to and studying music and has come to the conclusion that he can't quite connect to modern day hip hop and music, but still accepts and respects its artistic input in todays society, he's a real soldier in that way, Also the internet has critically changed this generations views and opportunities, but that's a whole other discussion. Okay i'm done now.....
Mar 27, 2015 Yes, but there also very in touch older people. Look at all the older famous white people that co-sign some of these younger artists. David Lynch comes to mind.
Mar 27, 2015 Generation X = Tupac Shakur Millennials = Peewee Longway Generation X = Nirvana Millennials = Ylvis
Mar 27, 2015 uhh rap music is f---ing garbage that's why compared to what "old" people listen to, it's f---ing garbage don't get me wrong, i only listen to rap nowadays but to think it's not "ignorant" or "loud" or "over the top" is a pretty small minded way of liking your taste own in music obviously it's not all like that but the creation of it from the beats to the lyrics is very.. "large" and "obnoxious" compared to other genres i think the seperation mostly comes from the fact that other genres use real instruments while rap music is generally computer made beats.. it follows along the 'new age' sound it's good to see more artists using live instruments tho
Mar 27, 2015 that's crazy, you would think having the internet at everyones fingertips would make people smarter like you said yet it does the complete opposite
