Sep 8, 2023 That song is so me tbh True, there’s also some more ballad type s--- in the back half. The aesthetic is appreciated. The first song reminded me of Avril I’ve heard of them before but never listened to them (common trend with me I know). I gotta listen then if they sound like this For sure. There’s still some relationship songs but it’s definitely not what the album is all about like last time. GUTS is an appropriate title because it really feels like the album is more about her and her spilling her guts. Her self-esteem, mental state, and personality is more on display
Sep 8, 2023 Some people thought this would be SOUR 2 but it’s definitely not. This is overall a more well-rounded album in every way. I think a few songs around the middle are weaker than the others but overall it’s a good album that I think will be better than SOUR in the long run. There aren’t as many immediate hits, but she wasn’t really going for that on most of this anyway. It sounds like “get him back!” is definitely a single though.
Sep 8, 2023 They're a bit more in the upbeat rock lane but some of the vocal mixing reminded me of them. Yeah one of my main takeaways off of first listen is that she's really finding her vocal personality and it's really fun
Sep 8, 2023 Shes so f---ing hot lol but this album is not for me. I dont think its bad just not my thing haha
Sep 8, 2023 Savor this moment, it's probably the only time this is gonna happen. Unless the tides really are shifting.
Sep 8, 2023 Well someone just called me corny and then in the next reply they said they appreciate me so I think I’m just in an alternate universe right now
Sep 8, 2023 Haven't heard it yet, but I've seen people call it her version of Weezer's Pinkerton which is very intriguing
Sep 8, 2023 Weird line up but the main things I hear influence wise are obvious 90s riot grrrl punk stuff, The Regrettes, Weezer, Taylor Swift (on the ballads), and a song or two has STRONG Beck energy. I'm usually against the pop punk/nerd rock revival s--- but I wouldn't be if it was well executed and had the right amount of self awareness like the rockier songs on here. A lot of the newer s--- in the genre is 30 years olds giving intense groomer energy
Sep 8, 2023 Imma catch hands for this. BUT when MGK switched genres and kinda did a rockish type of album that sounded like what people were listening to when I was in high school. I felt that way with this album . This had that back in my day “vibe” and I felt it was inspired by certain artists from back then
Sep 8, 2023 I want to make clear that I’m not comparing Olivia to MGK . It just feels like they had the same motive and objective with said albums
Sep 8, 2023 I get what you’re saying. MGK had a few pop punk songs I like but I think most of those songs from him are pretty bad, maybe even worse than his raps. Olivia’s music is leaps and bounds better than MGK. They’re definitely bringing back old sounds though. Same with The Weeknd, Dua Lipa, Charli XCX, and a few others. But I hope the trend dies down because not a lot of people these days can do old sounds without sounding like it’s a gimmick.
Sep 9, 2023 my favorite subgenre of pop punk is 30 year old tiktok men singing that about how much they hate their high school girlfriend
