Oct 6, 2015 but he literally has entire verses that are comprised of notable one-liner after another. for 16 bars. he says s--- like "last week i made a quarter, plus i still respect adults" thug is a fantastic writer.
Oct 6, 2015 It's lazy for me because I have no clue how to even approach talking about it. The same with a Malick movie tbh. That doesn't change the fact that when I read about Young Thug and the conversation pivots around lyric excerpts, it doesn't feel like it does him justice. It's too obvious for an artist who Is anything but. I think the problem is rap writers aren't good at writing about it yet. Not much in their wheelhouse to describe it except for broad statements about "harmony". Lyrics are easy and tangible, but they're the tip of the iceberg to me: that 1% you can see from the surface.
Oct 6, 2015 well 99% of rap writers are trash, but the narrative that's emerging actually places the emphasis on everything but his lyrics. did you see the washington post?
Oct 6, 2015 See my response to Paul. You have a habit of equating any criticism as meaning that I hate something. I like his lyrics. I don't like reviews that use them as their foundation. They're very clearly a flourish on something much more interesting that I haven't seen put into words very well. Nah, I don't read rap journalism except on here. Not a very contemporary person with music or movies tbh.
Oct 6, 2015 from my barter 6 review....although i could definitely say more about it nowadays: "Thug’s hooks switch up more in their 8-12 bars than some artists do on an entire album. His elastic vocals fluctuate between ecstatic highs and brooding lows, and the songwriting is assisted by a melting pot of melodies. He flourishes his delivery with the most nuanced flairs, ad-libs cutting in and out of the fabric of the aesthetic, vanishing before you can vibe to them, only to be rediscovered upon repeated listens. And all of this is carried by the way he cherry picks sing-song flows that go from nostalgic to innovative with whiplash inducing whimsy" but i get what you're saying about most people not being able to tap into the essence of what truly makes thug so mesmerizing in retrospect, i spent so much of the barter 6 review talking about what thug was actually saying...not just because im trying to counteract his critics like you claimed, but mainly because he truly is that interesting imo
Oct 6, 2015 Some of his peers (see: Fetty Wap, Rae Sremmurd, the three children stacked on top of one another to form Travi$ Scott) fill in verses out of obligation, stitching together danceable moments. im still dyin @ this @Skippy
Oct 6, 2015 idk if it's the 420 but this thread interesting as s--- rn @Charlie Strangelove and @WPG should do a talk show
Oct 6, 2015 Wow you mean i didn't go out of my way to read the op of a thread i was randomly tagged in? Woah.
Oct 6, 2015 or take 2 seconds to put the quote u were responding to in context? yea that is wut i mean breh
Oct 6, 2015 Lol @ assuming everyone else is invested enough to search through a review to find the exact part you thought was funny so they could get the context of the random mention they received
Oct 6, 2015 lol, dude, even out of context that quote doesn't in any way shape or form imply or necessitate those guys being on the tape.
