Mar 29, 2017 hey remember when Eminem would make all those songs about women, but in reality he was preaching about domestic violence
Mar 29, 2017 Even after reading this, I'm still not convinced that More Life is "revolutionizing the form". So having 5 dance tracks in a row and using little skits from other people make it boundary pushing? Pretty weak argument. He also never explains how More Life is more suitable for the evolving manner in which people listen to music.
Mar 29, 2017 keep the family close has the least amount of plays out of every song in Views. Sales that originally came from purchasing an entire album aren't even coming from listening to the entire project, but rather in a playlist form
Mar 29, 2017 Okay, but every album is digitized on streaming services and subject to being vultured for only the tracks which people enjoy. How does this do anything differently with those factors in mind? I could maybe see that argument if he released it as one long set instead of separate tracks. All I see are arguments which rely on interpreting a casual, slapped together grab bag as some boundary defying masterwork even though it's formally and functionally no different than anything else being put out.
Mar 29, 2017 It's album. Drake is one of the biggest artists of the decade - even if he goes fully digital, it's just windowdressing
Mar 29, 2017 Well tell that to Paul for endorsing the mental gymnastics that Drake fans constantly execute to put his music on a nonexistent pedestal.
Mar 29, 2017 I think the playlist tag was more just for his mindset/creative process. He f----- Views up with the changes in direction/sound, so focusing on just making tracks without a central theme freed his mind up a bit and it showed with how good the final product is.
Mar 29, 2017 what the f--- are you talking about lmao i've been writing for complex for years my more life piece isn't even a review, doesn't take a critical stance
Mar 29, 2017 if you think i ever take a stance because a publication tells me to, you're sorely mistaken
Mar 29, 2017 So do I. I just don't find your argument that he did something new with it is articulated very well.
Mar 29, 2017 The dude is finally getting praise for his writings and his name as a writer so it makes sense that he would compromise his own opinions for the benefit of his career. A lot people would be swayed to write in a certain light if it meant a bigger company. A piece praising More Life is going to do more for him than one bad mouthing it. Once you reach that level (Complex) they will dictate what you write for them. He's using hype I don't blame him... He didn't even post here to brag about 2 Chainz acknowledging his piece and Jehovah had to do it for him.. He's moving up in the world. Though I will say More Life is my 2nd favorite Drake project which is saying a lot. The project deserves praise but the fact that WPG has always been lukewarm on Drake (like me) doesn't mean he can't support the project. (I didn't read his More Life piece.. Assuming he only praises it and doesn't act like he's been a Drake Stan this whole time)
