I wouldn’t get too caught up with the score — If you take it as a track-by-track average, 5.5 is actually probably accurate in this instance. [I’d give every relationship and family (stepdad, etc.) song on this record a 0/10.]

While I think the content and score of the review is absolutely on point, the Pitchfork editorial team needs to do a better job of standardizing their numerical rating system, irrespective of the individual reviewer. For example, there is no way this record is only marginally better than Revival (Pitchfork score: 5.0). Furthermore, does anyone think that Revival is nearly twice as good as Recovery (Pitchfork score : 2.8)?!?! (BTW, the abomination that was the MMLP2 earned a Pitchfork 4.7).

The numerical rating assigned by Pitchfork is most often completely arbitrary and would never pass muster at any organization that is serious about upholding consistent standards for a numerical assessment of quality.

Y’all are better off ignoring the number and focusing on the content of the reviews, which is most often excellent.

Eminem critics are the most obsessed, cringy people on the internet. It really is sad.

You’ve spent every day for 15 years discussing how bad Eminem is. You’re even trying to make a career out of it. I would say you take the cake in the loser department.

do you seriously not think the same thing as i do about these weirdos who spend years on end on a forum angrily defending one rapper when they don’t even really care about/listen to the genre? it would be like you and i seeing one opera and then dedicating a decade of our lives to telling everyone on the internet that it was the best one, despite having seen like three others.

the people who just happen to like eminem a lot are totally reasonable; the ones like spatula are deeply disordered.

It’s a piece about how internet message board culture in the mid 2000s functioned akin to a found family dynamic similar to city life for young gay men in the late 70s . We’re all a big family

Ofc but what I liked about your review was acknowledging there’s been a critical overreaction to Eminem , which I suspect was at least partly driven by cultish stans making him seem overexposed . But I also wanted to mention EW so u can text ur friends and family!!

I liked Young MA’s verse. My problem with the song isn’t Em’s verse just that the two rappers don’t sound like they belong on the same song because their takes on it are completely different.

I’m more ambivalent toward Darkness. Cool concept, but on a sonic level it doesn’t do much for me.

If you don't generally care for rap/hiphop then there is nothing wrong with listening to and following a few or even one rapper. Your opera comparison is kinda obtuse
