you would have a h--- of a time arguing that Pluto and the rich g--- tape aren't classic. also second what @Narsh was saying about your "brazy" post.

or about rap writ large, i guess--Pluto is the blueprint for the vast majority of commercial hip-hop from 2012-present

That's not what I said at all but okay lol. Regardless, saying Kendrick is a top 5 rapper right now I don't think is laughable is anyway.

I was talking about both artists, you didn't specify you were only talking about drake

And yeah there are easily at least a dozen other rappers id rather listen to than Kendrick in 2016

And more when it comes to drake

i was actually just talking with a friend about whether or not future and thug have any classics, which we both came to the conclusion that they have a classic or two within their niche, but if we're talking classics overall, not completely defined by their genre, you'd have to make a tough argument for why they have classics that nearly anyone can agree on

i don't think something has to pander to you and the rest of the lcd soundsystem fan club to be a classic. there's no way you can reframe the last five years of hip-hop to say that Pluto isn't a classic. you can counter that the people who buy joey badass records disagree, but outkast was booed at the source awards.

Kendrick definately has the most influence. He has 3 classics. S80 GKMC and TPAB. all of them have a unique style that contains jazz and nontraditional influences. Drakes albums hasn't yet reach the caliber of Kendrick's and most of them are enjoyable pop records. NWTS is his best album but it's not a classic. Therefore. Kendrick is better.

im not disagreeing with you that Future laid the foundation for modern rap starting with Pluto, but that begs the question that if something is influential, does that automatically make it classic?

and for the outkast s---, i have no idea what that has to do with this conversation

Pluto is influential for both inventing and popularizing multiple new styles of rap, and has a handful of the decades best singles alongside evocative, personal material. it's a classic by definition.

it means that brilliant art is often over peoples heads in its own time

Like I said, I definitely see where you're coming from, but a big part of what makes an album a classic is how much discussion it brings and I barely see any discussion for that album. It'd be cool if you did a write-up on the album down the line as I feel like you'd probably flesh it out more there.
and yes, but the reason people initially ignored outkast/didnt respect them initially is that when they won that source award, the east coast/west coast rap beef was hitting its peak, ignoring southern rap at the time which ended up becoming way bigger towards the end of the 90's, especially thanks to outkast as their sound evolved and became generally more accessible but still had a lot of artistic bite behind it

the album changed hip-hop and was inescapable for 18 months. no one's replicated it since. if you weren't around people who talked endlessly about pluto, you weren't engaged w/ rap at all.

so you're saying certain music fans didn't give a brilliant act its proper due because they were preoccupied with others things? sounds like you're making my point for me.

(let's not kid ourselves and say that The Infamous is somehow more accessible and listener-friendly than the outkast debut. come on.)

well i was too busy being obsessed with odd future like most 14 year olds at that time to care about future, so hey you got something on me
and yes? im just mentioning that the context to why people initially weren't into outkast at the time is pretty different to why people disliked future when he first came out, unless you want to flesh out that argument a bit more, which im legit interested to read despite you being a smarmy a------ to me
