Aug 13, 2015 "replay value" in the sense that you cant just pick a song and play it whenever you want because it doesnt have "hits." The album is too dense and kendrick did this on purpose. I have to play the album from top to bottom in order to enjoy it, only songs i play casually are king kunta and alright. This isnt a knock on the album though, an album should be something you listen to in full.
Aug 13, 2015 Obviously replay value is subjective, but variety, mood, type of song/structure, and subject matter are all factors. There's a reason many people have cited low replay value as a means to judge TPAB. In other news, this thread inspired me to listen to GKMC again
Aug 13, 2015 I really need to play it again, I tried to like it on release but I only ended up liking 4-5 tracks.. As posted earlier in the thread, I did expect another GKMC, I wouldn't call TPAB s---, It's unique but it's just not for everyone. Going to spin it all the way through again tomorrow, see if it can enlighten me anymore.
Aug 13, 2015 It's still a pseudo-criticism. I don't listen to TPAB super often but I would never use low replay value as a criticism of the album because that's f---in' dumb. Judge the album for the music, not because you don't want/feel like listening to it.
Aug 13, 2015 I very rarely listen to anything outside of hip hop but I'm still able to enjoy it I think it's not so much the fact that their taste is applied to one genre, but rather the fact that they want to be different so when an album comes out and has critical acclaim, they want to be the ones saying it sucks and s---. Or they simply can't enjoy King Kendrick
Aug 13, 2015 So i guess i'm different just because i don't feel the album. and i don't like just playing individual songs from albums, i play the whole thing. It's just that with this album, i have no desire to relisten it. It seems i'm not the only one feeling this way. It's a great album tho
Aug 13, 2015 It's not even about expecting a GKMC 2. I was expecting something out of the box before I even heard the album and I had no problem with that. The album is just a little too dense/overly complex personally. There's too much going on thematically and sometimes production wise. It's still a dope album but there's so much of it I don't play because some of the production was meh to me. In the end Kendrick can't make anything less than a good album but I definitely expected more.
Aug 13, 2015 Here are my thoughts on it. Is it a classic? Yes. Does it hold much replay value on an album shuffle? IMO No. The album is made to be listened to front to back and tell a story. It is a dense, thought-provoking concept album with strong/meaningful messages/lyrics behind it. It is not for everyone and I will not sit here and lie and say that I listen to this album often. The 4 tracks I can listen to by their lonesome are I, Hood Politics, king Kunta, and the blacker the berry (Also my Top 4 songs on the album). I usually play the album once a month front to back and that is when the album really shines. It is a classic album IMO, but not a perfect album, as I feel there is no such thing as a perfect album. It has its flaws though, which every album does. IMO Sometimes the production gets a little too overwhelming for me, replayability, the whole Pac thing is great but kiiiiiinda forced and corny at times (almost like trying too hard), and there isn't any of that hard GKMC/Compton Kendrick flow. I would however admit that I do like GKMC more. It flows almost as well, but the replayability of that album is just off the chain. I might as well also throw in that (recent) albums I enjoyed more include.... 1. Compton 2. GKMC 3. Run the Jewelz 1 and 2 4.TPAB These to me are all recent classics IMO. I do not believe that MBDTF is in anyway shape of form a classic album, but that discussion be held off for later.
Aug 13, 2015 Not sure if it's been said already, but all of you mindless people bashing it's replay value are pretty f---ing annoying. It's like all you can say. I f---in love this album. Still album of the year. Production was on point too. I f---in loved the sound and everything about this album.
