I suspect Hail, Caesar! will go in the books as a lesser Coens' effort and, after the brilliant Inside Llewyn Davis, it very well might be. Regardless of its place though, I had a lot of fun with it. It is a broad, often extremely silly comedy, but most of it works thanks to a game cast, from Brolin in the lead through the glorified cameos from Johansson and Fiennes (Alden Ehrenreich probably steals the show overall).

The movie carries an undercurrent of existential searching and, if anything, it's this aspect that could have been further developed. However, unlike a lot of Coen protagonists before him, instead of finding a void at the end of his search, Brolin's Eddie Mannix finds meaning and purpose in his work and in the movies themselves. Odes to movies and Hollywood are certainly cliche, especially recently, but in the hands of the Coens, Hail, Caesar! is at once deeply strange and lovingly rendered.

A sparse formal design and efficient narration engage the viewer in what could have otherwise been surreal and gimmicky.

      79/100 - Very Good

    We're slacking on discussion!!!

What do you guys think of the DAG, PGA, SAG, split? (Revenant, Big Short, Spotlight) I think the Oscar could go in any direction at this point.

@FilmAndWhisky Sorry to hear about The Witch, I'll probably be checking it out next week.

Regarding the Oscars, I think (and hope) they wouldn't award Innaritu back-to-back Best Picture awards (he'd be the first to do it), but given that his movie is the most obviously directed, I think the DGA win translates into another Best Director win (he'd be the third to go back-to-back there, I believe).

As for Best Picture, based on not much more than the PGA, my feeling is The Big Short over Spotlight.

I haven't, but I heard it was pretty good!

Last night, I saw Tobias Lindholm's A War, the Danish nominee for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars. I found it to be a sturdy, vérité war drama, one that finds truth more often in moments and small gestures than it does in its overly familiar plotting. Its moral ambiguities are certainly provocative, though the manner in which the scenarios are constructed is telegraphed. Lindholm did give an especially thoughtful and articulate Q&A afterwards.

I've seen 3 of the Foreign Language nominees now...not passionate about any of them so far. Will check out Embrace of the Serpent in the next couple weeks.

Given that it was such a huge hit this weekend, I was thinking about giving it a shot and was wondering what peeps here thought. At the moment, I'm still leaning towards skipping it in theaters...
I've thought about getting Hulu for awhile, but never pulled the trigger. I don't think I watch enough movies any more. The collection looks dope though.

I finally reviewed Out 1: noli me tangere. @Rowjay Stan. It's a long review so I'll just post my pull-quote and link the review.

97/100 - Ultimately the film is rather simple: two theater groups perform Aeschylus, some were once members of a semi-secret group of intellectual idealists, and a seemingly crazy boy with bizarre ideas and actions forces them to reconnect. This occurs over 13 protracted hours, wherein the wait, the confusion, and the will to solve the puzzle becomes part of one’s overwhelming experience of what may only be called a masterfully crafted cinematic experiment.

    Jason Lives too? :khaled:

Always remembered The Final Chapter being the standout with 3D and Freddy vs. Jason the closest behind. Might have to give them another look since it's been a while.

The Final Chapter is better than 1, 2, and 3, but they all feel kind of samey and uninspired. A New Beginning is straight madness by way of hiring a scummy p--- director. Jason Lives feels comic book like and almost aimed at families.

I've looked around and there really isn't a popular consensus on taking the series as far as I can tell.
