    this actually a fascinating discussion to me. on one hand i LOVE reading music reviews after an album comes out especially one from a writer i respect (@captain awesome @WPG )--you guys pick up on things that i probably would never hear and in a sense your writing brings new life to an album i may have already listened to hundreds of times. to me that's really cool and definitely a work of art in itself. on the other hand i've never been a fan of reading reviews that pan a certain album/artist. i know it probably sounds like i'm burying my head in the sand, but something about a music reviewer criticizing/mocking a project that an artist spent years creating rubs me the wrong way. would love to know how you guys feel about that....(like wpg obviously you gave blonde a positive review, but would you feel weird writing an unfavorable review 2 days after an album came out knowing that the artist took 4 years to make it???)

    yeah i mean, i know what you mean -- except when it comes to reading imdb reviews lol. id rather read an actual thoughtful that makes me appreciate whats going on with something ive just heard/watched then some random illiterate being like "the special fx were rly awesum!!!!!!!"

    i dont see paul having a big head --- but you do need a thick skin and be able to defend your point of view if you want to cut it as a critic. obviously medium talents take it too far and are often extremely pretentious

    yeah i mean... tone is everything. snark is usually rly off putting and a lazy writing device. its a critics job to assess and judge in an even kneeled, thought provoking way. its not an easy job, and the internet world has actually empowered way too many people to think their takes should count. dbl edged sword.

    Writers I usually enjoy either have,
    • a historical understanding of music & trends allowing them to providing context for place & originality
    • a technical understanding of compositions allowing them to highlight the construction of the music
    • the ability to communicate thoughts, ideas, & emotions expressed in the the work sourced from the work with little influence from other sources (example: interviews where the artists states the purpose of the work) with as little bias of what they think it should be.
    I usually don't aspire to an objective reality in music unless we're talking about physics.
