ok from the sound of the first song I'm liking this. But he doesn't have that heavy accent like a lot of UK rappers do

Well, in US defense, if we hear a US rapper and he sounds really white and nerdy, then we usually write them off too.

Problem is, English accents, to us, sound whiter and nerdier than the whitest and nerdiest that the US offers. We just don't take it serious.

Like it or not, hip hop was derived from urban American culture. It's been apart of our music scene since the late 70's/early 80's.

It just sounds really corny to us.

no but that logic just doesnt make sense, i get its ur opinion and you're welcome not to like british accents but the reason why americans dont like UK artists isnt because they sound "white and nerdy"

and it doesnt matter where hip hop dervied from we're not talking about hip hop, but i get what you're saying different strokes for different folks i know people that dont like american accents aswell

The question of this thread is why UK rap isn't big in America though.

I'm not trying to come off offensive in this, but it's just a preference thing for most of Americans.

Like I said, when most of us hear an English accent, it just sounds white and nerdy... or corny.

Dude could be black and the toughest thug in England. It doesn't matter to us though, it just doesn't sound right to us in hip hop.

Maybe we're closed-minded, but I'm telling you, that's a huge reason for our lack of interest in it.

ya i know i get what you're saying im just correcting you in speaking for all americans i really dont think ur right about that i think its your opinion and thats fine but not applicable to your whole country

and most uk rappers dont do hip hop they do grime so bringing up the origins of hip hop is kinda needless and i mean kinda just sounds like some old head logic like the person dominating is not some american street dude its a jewish canadian idk why youd think you have to be black and street to sound "right" in that genre but yeah w.e i guess it all opinion

I can't tell you how many times I've heard people say that they didn't like US rappers because they sound too white or corny.

We're talking "big" too, not just a sub-culture within America.

Take a look at a rapper like Immortal Technique. Dude is from Harlem, has great lyrics and urban message. However, if you talk to the majority of hip hop fans who dismiss Immortal Technique, their main issue with him is his delivery. Funny thing is, he's Peruvian, but tends to sound nerdy. (I don't like Immortal Technique).

And I'd honestly choose IT over any UK rapper lol.

I've had conversations with people about UK rappers too, and we recognize they have skill and have their unique styles, but it's just not something that draws us in.

Of course I can't speak for every American lol. Obviously I'm going off of personal preferences, conversations and experiences. There's Americans who support it, and honestly, good for you guys for developing your own culture. I just don't think it'll ever catch on in America though.

wut does that anecdote about immortal technique have to do w/ grime man lmao you're over complicating this convo

you dont like british accents, you think they sound "white and "nerdy" which is fine you're entitled to that but im telling u ur wrong in thinking everyone on your rock thinks the same way u do

ya big up then i guess, im f---in crine at "developing your own culture" though as if Britain is some new small place as if it isnt older than America loool noone is really asking for it too though either people like drake using grime culture is absolute cancer to it

I'm pretty sure I've said several times that MOST, not ALL, Americans feel like I do.

I brought up Immortal Technique because he's a Peruvian from Harlem, which is the furthest thing from "white and nerdy" that you can get, but his f---ing delivery sounds nerdy.

I'm giving you an example of an American rapper who is dismissed by the majority of American hip hop fans because of his DELIVERY.

The question of this thread was brought to AMERICANS, and most Americans, if not all in this thread, have s--- on the accent, yet you guys keep trying to convince us it's not that or something lol.

At least I'm trying to give you more of a description to WHY we think the accent is annoying. Sorry, but it's true.

    This is an excellent post.

The only current UK rapper I listen to is Dave and I'm from the UK. I feel like grime is to much about the rap itself which makes it sound disjointed from the beat imo, so a majority of it doesn't appeal to me.

But of those I listened to my favourite has to be Tinie Tempah back in the day. Man used to be fire with songs like this:

It's the accent. Hip Hop started in America, Americans prefer regional American accents when it comes to the rappers they listen to. And if those rappers aren't from America, then they either need to adopt a more American sounding accent or have a more neutral foreign accent. Oddly, it's not really an issue with other genres, it's a bigger issue in Rap.
