Mar 23, 2017 No rapper (u can easily debate artist after the 90s) has ever been as big as Eminem during his mmlp run I dont think many kids nowadays can fathom just how big Eminem was. He was so big he carried over rap to countries that never f----- with it
Mar 23, 2017 You are f---ing delusional if u think Drake or any other rapper can touch 2001 Eminem Im not even talking about sales, Eminem is an actual reference in movies to describe that era He wasnt just big, he was a movement
Mar 23, 2017 Yeah eminem was popular world wide. If you had the same technology then, that's out today with streams that drake has eminem would have done even larger numbers. Just him making an appearance at live shows people would literally go insane once eminem came out on stage. He would steal their own show, something I don't see drake do. Remember how huge eminem was on MTV too and tv in general? The younger people who were too young and weren't listening to hip hop in 00-03 just won't understand. He was on another level in terms of popularity around the world.
Mar 23, 2017 I was there and it was absolutely mental. Not to mention he sold out that stadium what, 2 or 3 days in a row? Drake couldn't do that even now at his most popular.
Mar 23, 2017 This thread is hilarious considering Eminem is going to do minimum of 1 million in the first week in 2017, quote me on that. Numbers are the most concrete reflection of popularity, nobody in hip hop has, had, or will have better numbers than Em.
Mar 23, 2017 I'm an old f--- so I can answer this without bias. However, it's really hard to compare the 2 since the eras were so d--- different. I would argue eminem was bigger in his prime because he would LITERALLY shut down Times Square New York City whenever he made an appearance on MTV and TRL (maybe this only happened once or twice and I'm misremembering, but nevertheless, it was often a s--- show over there when he made appearances). The entire Times Square would be shut down due to so many people and then MTV would PACK the studio with annoying kids who screamed their faces off for Eminem. Aside from MTV, dude was all over the radio, he was on the local college hip hop stations, the generic pop/hip hop/rnb top 40 bs stations, AND he was being played on rock and roll stations. Drake has never had this cross over appeal like eminem. Plus back then, we had real publications that were constantly printing stuff about Em. Rolling Stones, XXL, and the Source were probably the biggest "offenders" of this but also the gossip mags and s--- had photos of eminem all the d--- time. Everywhere you went, you saw this dudes bleached head on every single magazine rack and check out counter in every store in America. It was too much haha I could also compare them musically, in terms of quantity and quality they released, how big an impact their label had in the game, how big their features changed the game, etc but I don't feel like getting into all that. Drake is the biggest today, but I think if you're comparing prime popularity to prime popularity, eminem was way bigger, but that's mainly due to the era he blew up in, an era where MTV was (sadly and depressingly) a source of exposure for your favorite artists, numerous print publications using Em as a way to increase sales and as a result, you saw his face in every single store. And to top that off, every time you put on the radio at home or in your car, eminem Real Slim Shady was playing. You couldn't escape the dude. Drake came super close to this phenomenon, but he's just a TAD bit smaller than how big eminem was when MMLP came out and changed the world. Edit: Just for the record, I love Drake and the irony is, if I kept track, I think I listen to him more then Em these days.
Mar 23, 2017 Wow I just spent 6 paragraphs explaining what you said in a few words. I always over do it. I haven't seen a rapper explode the way eminem did. In hindsight, it's insane to remember a rapper blew up the way eminem did.
Mar 23, 2017 guys I don't really know about US or America as a continent but in Europe and Asia Eminem is probably still more well known than Drake is.
Mar 23, 2017 as an asian i can confirm nobody even know drake. eminem is pretty popular here. though eminem was the biggest in his mmlp era but ironically here eminem was the biggest in his recovery era. i know recovery gets lots of hate and hardcore fans dont want another recovery but if eminem decides to do another mainstream album like recovery he would blow up here again
Mar 23, 2017 When somebody tells you to shut the f--- up and called you a fa----… And then asks you to s--- their d-ck :/
Mar 23, 2017 TRL was crazy, but you're exaggerating his radio plays before TES. Sure maybe specific stations, of course. It's not like no radio played him. But are you forgetting nsync and Britney etc? They were bigger than em, especially on radio
Mar 23, 2017 Oh absolutely, I don't disagree at all that Britney and nsync and s--- like that definitely got a ton of radio plays. And maybe this was region specific, but Real slim shady was played at least once an hour on the mainstream pop/hip hop/rnb station in the northeast (where I grew up). I don't think I'm overstating how much eminem was all over the radio when real slim shady came out, but again, this might be specific to where you lived at the time. Plus, I didn't mention Britney or someone else who got more spins because I'm comparing em's radio play to drakes radio play and how they were different (Em being played on underground college radio and rock and roll stations whereas this doesn't happen with drake, as far as I know). The Real slim Shady charted on the Billboard Alternatives chart at 19, which is the rock and roll chart. As far as I know, Drake has never charted on rock and roll stations.
