Renaissance 8/10

what the h--- is happening? is this AI? is this from 20 years ago mixed with re-recorded verses and AI in a clever way?
dope intro, on Premonition's level but better for obvious reasons.

Habits 6.5/10

that switch to slim shady voice sent me to h--- and paradise at the same time. don't like the flow. second verse flow is actually dope, got that smootheness but half choppy(?_?). third verse, we're back on the doomsday 2 flow. can't let it go can you?
oh now we're back.
g.d. when they mix together I want to r--- a little person.
the faster flow doesn't bother me, it's laid back and not speedrapping. white gold is great.

Trouble 6.5/10

I mean it's a cool interlude but this f---ing beat is fire he should've made a whole song for it.
f--- blind people and deaf people s---?

best I can do is interpret it as "you want me to go back to this dumb s---?" while making a mockery of his old self. point is, that's not what slim shady did.

see here I actually like that when he switches voices his style changes too and modern em fully kicks in. He knows he could sound differently but likes what he does now I guess.

VERSE 3 IS GREAT. I can't even tell the ai voice and his normal voice in the beginning. Pretty good when it goes fully back to modern em again too. Flow is still choppy at times but it goes well with the insane beat. What a beat.

the beautiful layered vocals with the choppy flow are creating the biggest conflict ever in me. sounds like Nice Guy or Good Guy whatever that s--- was.

alright, I interpret it as Slim Shady and Eminem together subtly making fun of majin buu's while also staying a bit serious.

Eminem wanted to let us know he supports Stevie but he wouldn't f--- him. cool.


the f--- is this voice LOL. low key loved that last verse.

f---. this might actually be the best song on the album. too bad. should've released something else as a single maybe.

I mean isn't this exactly all we wanted?
should've called this My Darling 2 tho. also Evil Twin ON STEROIDS and I love that song to death.
the beat is doing weird things to my crotch area. sounds like Trouble's beat.

love that they're kind of battling and having a conversation at the same time. love that it sounds like a schizo with an identity disorder having an episode.

the final skit sounds like he legit called Paul in the middle of the night and started ramblin with a tape recorder in his free hand

Head Honcho 7/10. maybe 6.5, would be higher without one of the two ez mil verses.

DOPE f---ing opening from eminem. flow sounds like 2003 cocky smooth attitude, but with his modern voice.

of course this is Arose 2, but you could've done it without making it sound like it actually came from Revival. I hate everything about that style.

I like that he's talking to all of his kids not just Hailie.

Kyrie & Luka - great beat and of course eminem comes in and switches it. he kinda flows like crazy but I'm glad this was a bonus track too.


Final Thoughts

not what I expected at all. not what I was dreamin of either. This was never meant to be SSLP2. This is old eminem vs new eminem.
On my first listen I was actually slightly disappointed, especially when Habits kicked in with the first verse's weird delivery, despite liking pretty much all the songs. I've been waiting for this album for so long and I was so hyped, then Houdini set the bar so f---ing high.
When Luis Resto said this was a hodgepodge of ideas musically he really gave the most fitting description anybody could give. There's some SSLP and MMLP, there's TES and Encore, there's a strong Kamikaze/MTBMB presence with much crazier beats and a different approach, half of a verse on a song sounded like MMLP2, Somebody Save Me is Revival, Lucifer is Relapse + SSLP + MTBMB. really it's just Recovery that's missing.
The AI and the throwbacks -- it's fan service but the good kind I think.
there IS a concept, just not what I (and I'm sure many other people) expected. The concept is mostly Slim Shady vs Eminem fighting in his tortured mind, which largely comes more to life on Guilty Conscience 2.
The production is great, the sound and theme are pretty cohesive until the very last few tracks.
I think he outdid his new-self, the higher highs ARE HIGH AS f---, but he keeps giving into some of his bad habits.
It's okay for Temporary and Somebody Save Me to be here but they should've followed the concept, with the same topic, and it would've been much more interesting and they would've been better songs.
It's makes no sense for Tobey to be here and I would make an argument for Bad One as well. no filler is really ruining the potential of the album like they did for his two last albums, but they kinda do stop it from being a masterpiece.
Let's just briefly get into the writing. This won't get him canceled and he sounded desperate and dumb on some instances but the desperate part of me tells me it's the whole point, Slim has lost his mind, extremely over the top, saying s--- just to try to upset people for the sake of it, and Eminem is telling him you sound like a fool. So I can kinda appreciate it.
Didn't catch any extremely corny bar and if there were any it mattered so little I didn't even notice.
He flows like crazy and still ruins some verses with the choppy flow, BUT, on some of these crazy beats it actually goes along well. In some songs even with his modern voice he's kinda trying to delivery the lines like he would on his best albums. Well then stick to it, dumbass. But it's good. We couldn't possibly expect him to just go back to 1999-2004 and stop rapping the way he's done for over a decade all of a sudden.
The laid back on some songs (but really just a few afrer all) is maddening cause the mixing on the vocals on songs like Lucifer sound like a modern version of SSLP/MMLP. That's what I wanted from an album with Slim Shady in the title, but alright.
I like that he kept the feat to a minimum. This had to be Slim Shady ft. Eminem as it was. which makes the fact he gave 2 verses to ez mil insane but alright.

What's next? I have no f---ing clue, do you? I doubt he will take this approach again or else he will be stuck making sequels to this album.
Reinventing himself again will be even a bigger challenge.

I know what you mean, I tried to convince myself of the same thing but I doubt that was the point lol. I think he just couldn't choose clearly and kinda pussied out of making a clear point, which makes him cowardly acknowledging he shouldn't say this or that, and yet rambling pathetically on some other instances. "worst of both worlds" like that critic said

also I just listened to "Hello" from Relapse (10/10 track), and as a Shady resurrection it lowkey makes almost everything on that new album sound stupidly cinematic and badly written.

as a whole, to complete that previous post, I think Relapse is criminally underrated as a concept album that is very similar to The Death of Slim Shady. It cleverly explores the duality between a pathetic drugged loser slowly dying, as exposed in the "emotional" TDOSS tracks, and the obsession for the character of Shady, the serial killer/unapologetic, strong, killer character. Déjà Vu is the masterpiece, of course, but even the kinda cringe-worthy serial killer tracks aged really well because of how well they fit the concept. The soul of Relapse came from real life, with 06-07 Em actually becoming obsessed with serial killer documentaries on TV and all that, while TDOSS comes from Em's frustration and incapacity to sound relevant in 2024 without convoking the old mythology
