    BOO!!!!!! A REVIEW OUTTA NOWHERE!!!!

Jankland - A Night At The Section Eighty

    Favorites:
The Rhythm of the Night, Be My Lover, My Prerogative (this may be one of the greatest songs I’ve ever heard), Plastic Love, Never Too Much, Mayonaka no Door / Stay With Me

    RIPPER ROO’S RATING: 10/10!!!!!!!!

This was an extremely easy review to make as I’ve heard most of these songs, and all of these songs are amazing and probably some of the best songs ever made. I mean seriously, My Prerogative is so f---ing good. I try to respect people’s opinions but if you don’t like this song there might be something wrong with you. This funky s--- takes over my soul and got me pulling off dance moves I ain’t ever seen or done before. s--- seriously got me moving like a r-----.

I tried to find things to nitpick so I could bring the score down but I just couldn’t do it. This tape is an undeniable 10/10. I don’t even have to think about it, it’s an instant classic. Lots of variety and a Kate Bush song that isn’t Running Up That Hill? Holyyyyyyyy! These city pop songs are f---ing legendary, I mean what a f---ing genre. I can’t get enough.

Seeing Luther Vandross on here is awesome as he’s really been on my mind lately ever since Kendrick Lamar’s Luther song. What a legendary artist and song on here. The cover and title of this mixtape is really fitting, this tape is some legendary s--- to dance to. It’s stuff like this that is really starting to make me think this era was the peak of music. Thank you for this mixtape this s--- was good af @AOTWClub

    @Ripper Roo - Ripper Raw

    review

God d---. What a bumpable f---ing mixtape. This is such an amazing collection of songs, the playlist does exactly what I hoped it would when I first saw the tracklist. It effortlessly distills the very essence of the golden age of hip hop into a mere 16 tracks. The final result is a very cohesive and smooth set of tracks that are nearly all hits and no misses.

My review today might be a tad shorter than usually because I’ve been f---ing swamped at work this past week, but I’ll do my best to list some of my favorite songs and what I enjoyed about them.

First of all the opening, Rakim track, is a song I haven’t heard in its entirety in a long while. Hearing it again was very nostalgic. Rakim’s flow gotta be one of my favorites ever. Also the scratching on this track does so much for me.

Far From Yours is an insanely great song too. Great flows, killer bars and an insane instrumental with a great chorus by Yvette Michele. I feel like O.C. definitely influenced a ton of jazzier rap from the 2010s and onward. Certain motifs and sounds on this track remind me of one of the Heart tracks by Kendrick lol (maybe it was sampled? Not sure rn.)

Smooth Operator was definitely one of my favorites on here. The minimalistic, yet heavy hitting beat proves itself a great base for Big Daddy Kane’s verses. I love his demeanor and the way he introduces the hook with his lines. The instrumental breakdown is fly as h--- too.

I never really listened to Jeru the Damaja, but Ya Playin’ Yaself goes so, so, SO hard! Great flow, classic beat, and sick oneliners. This one caused me to have a permanent stankface.

Loved A Friend by KRS-One, too. This is such a special song. This beat is one of my favorites I’ve heard in years. A lot is to be said about the flows too; great combination of catchy and hard-hitting spitting. Subject matter is very endemic for this era too. Replayed this one so many times. 10/10

I said it alread but lemme repeat myself real quick: What I’m Here 4 by g--- Starr absolutely f---s !!! Such an insane track. Guru is too good at this rapping s---, it is absurd how effortless his verses sound. I need to get into more g--- Starr cause this one blew me away.

Double Trouble is a classic tune from a classic album. Still hits as hard as it did when I first heard it. Prime Mos Def was a different f---ing beast, he kills it on this. I absolutely love The Roots!

Closing the tape out with such a powerful Biggie track was a great decision! Suicidal Thoughts and Ready To Die are tracks that, to me, showcase how much potential Biggie truly had. He’s a literal wizard when he’s just spitting his s--- but to me he truly shines on tracks such as these where the dark subject matter brings out a very different side of him. Absolutely legendary song.

The tracks I listed were my personal highlights, and after listening to the mix for 4 times, I found myself bumping these for atleast 5 more times each. There is a lot of iconic s--- on this tape and that is what made it so memorable to me.

Although there aren’t any real skips or misses on this mix, there were a few songs that did not grab me as much as the others did. I found tracks like Hey Young World, Get Down, and Hard Knox a bit harder to connect with. These are my only ‘complaints’ with this playlist.

Fantastic mixtape man! Loved being transported to this era of hip-hop. Even though the genre went a long way since those times, these songs still stand on their own as great hallmarks of rap. I have a lot of full albums and discographies to catch up on after listening to this tape, so I’ll thank @Ripper Roo for the mix and drop a

    9/10

Thank you so much!!! This is great to hear as I really wanted to make something people play over and over
d--- this is a real compliment:emoji_purple_heart: And the scary part is this isn’t even scratching the surface. This era of hip hop is an absolute treasure trove!
Oh h--- yeah, it’s very nostalgic. Plus, it immediately makes me think of New York. When music does that you know it’s great. Rakim even has another dope song on this same album that really evokes New York as well called “New York (Ya Out There)”. Rakim is a legend.
It’s nice to see someone really talk about this track, I feel like it wasn’t mentioned a ton. I love that I came across this song. I can definitely see what you mean when you say it influenced jazzier rap. I tried looking at Kendrick’s Heart series on Genius to see if this was sampled but it wasn’t in the sample credits. It definitely makes sense though and it would be dope to sample this.
Same! Great description of the track! Big Daddy Kane another legend
I know right? I can’t believe I never heard of this guy before. That’s what I mean about this era of hip hop. Good s--- can just come out of nowhere.
KRS One another legend and you’re absolutely right this song is elite
All absolute fax. Love g--- Starr, Mos Def, The Roots, Black Thought, etc. absolute legends
I honestly added this song only maybe a few days before the mixtape came out. It was on my mind the whole time making the mixtape but I didn’t know where to fit it, and I thought it might be too obvious of a pick. But like I’ve said before I’m a sucker for sad endings so I thought this would be the perfect track. I’m glad I made that decision though because it seems you and others really enjoyed it. It’s a shame Biggie was taken from us so soon.
Thanks a lot man. It sounds like I really achieved my mission with this one and this whole experience with this mixtape has been very validating. It’s beautiful that this is motivating you to check out more of these artists and albums.

That was quick lmao. Glad you enjoyed it so much! The Kate Bush pick was actually on my shortlist of songs to be on there in case i needed to change something I made a last minute switch to put it on the mixtape the night I posted it so I'm glad it worked out lol.

I'm happy you love My Prerogative that much I f---ing adore that song. I'm curious you said you heard most of the songs so which ones were new to you? I'm interested to see what's new and what's well trodden with this tape for people.

Plastic Love, Remember Summer Days, Mayonaka no Door / Stay With Me, and Hounds Of Love were the songs that were new to me I believe. I love all the city pop songs I’ve heard but I just haven’t taken the time to dive in that genre yet. Kinda the same story with Kate Bush as well. Sometimes I just procrastinate and get lazy lol

Outside of Ready To Die idk if I heard any song on here which was dope. Gonna keep this brief although I want to do a track by track I'm tired asf and prolly won't have tome to get to it before the deadline tmrw.

I appreciate the commitment to just rap, all the songs were great while not sounding samey. I didn't expect you to be the one to make a Playlist like this and that's a compliment!

I'm usually not too boomer about music but I do miss some of this kind of production, everything was just so smooth. Everyone knew how to flow perfectly over these kinds of beats too.

Even from the people that can be hit or miss for me like Slick Rick (he's good just the storytelling can lose me sometimes) were great, a solid handful of songs that are gonna be in rotation. Especially It's Been A Long Time, that song is f---in incredible to me.

I definitely think this is up there as one of the strongest tapes throughout both rotations and I'm glad to see everyone enjoying it!

Favorite Songs: It's Been A Long Time, Far From Yours, Smooth Operator, Ya Playin Yerself, Let The Games Begin, Hard Knox, Ready To Die

    RATING:
    10/10

Yayyyyy I was slightly worried some people here would’ve heard more of these songs
    Understandable!
Thank you! I wanted to do something unexpected and surprising. I know most people probably expected pop music from me with a bunch of women singers lol. I wanted to show there’s more to Roo than meets the eye! Since I was sticking to one genre I was definitely worried about my picks sounding samey but thankfully it seems I avoided that as hip hop even in this era has a bunch of different sounds
I feel you bro. I feel like it’s much easier to go back in this era and find good songs than it is today because it’s so oversaturated with dogshit now since everyone and their mother thinks they can be a rapper lol
If there’s one thing I wanted to do it was to put people on to It’s Been A Long Time lol such a gem
Thank you bro your music opinions are some that I respect the most so it means a lot to get this score from you:emoji_purple_heart:

    Ripper Raw Review

First thing I'm gonna say is this s--- is fire, love most of these songs. There wasn't one song i didn't like.

Ripper really found that classic old school feel with this compilation of songs. Its crazy to me people prefer newer songs over a collection like this.

I had heard a good portion of these songs but even the few I didn't know i really liked.

My favorite songs on this are: Its Been a Long Time, Far From Yours, Smooth Operator, Double Trouble and Ready To Die.

This is a nearly flawless collection of older rap songs, so I'm gonna give it a

Thanks man. Knowing your music taste I was honestly gonna be shocked if you didn’t like this
Awesome bro because I really like that old school feel sometimes. Sometimes it feels like s--- was just usually more raw back then, that’s kinda where the Ripper Raw idea comes from. Even the idea of a “mixtape” in general stems from hip hop like this
You were one of the few people in the group I thought would’ve maybe heard most of these songs and like them so I knew I was probably getting a good review from you lol
Good picks, these are def some of my favs as well. I think It’s Been A Long Time was d--- near everyone’s favorite lol I’m so glad I included that
h--- yeah man thank you. It’s crazy to think about all the music arguments we’ve had in the past only to finally get to a point where I’m making playlists that you like and vice versa lol good s---

    Diggle - Everyone's 5th Fav Mixtape

I'm trying to catch up.. slowly!

    Okay vaaamos:

No more questions - f---ing classic. What else can I say man.
Everlasting Bass - thank god for this. I can now delete the mostly horrible Kanye, Future and Kendrick song and listen to the OG instead. Never heard this lmao, love it!
Sunset Driver - the thing about MJ songs is that I absolutely hate the sex sounds he makes during his songs. Its why I hate a lot of his music. But this is a nice one ngl. It's very funky and you can't not vibe to this while listening. Makes me wanna go on a sunset drive whewww
Dancing Queen - yeah its iconic as f--- but I'm not a fan of this song at alll lol
We Got The Beat - wow never heard this, catchy as f---, added this one (as well) to my playlist!
I'll Be Loving You - sorry bro. I know I listen to female music sometimes but this is crossing a line for me lmao.
Uncle Albert - nice song. Especially love the second, more upbeat part of it.
Wheel in the Sky - its nice, bit too dramatic sounding at times but its good especially the hook >>
Baby Blue - dope as f---!
Call Me - Iconic as h--- obviously, knew it from ome of the Chucky movies at first lmao. Great track.
Bad Reputation - also a classic, heard a lot in movies/shows from what I recall.
Sabotage - not a huge fan sadly
My Own Summer - not the type of s--- I'd put on during the summer but its okay. Too screamish for my liking sadly.
Heart Shaped Box - like it, don't love it. Like most of Nirvana's stuff.
Wish You Were Here - classic.
Nothing Else Matters - wow what a close. 10/10 duuuhh

Great tape @DiggleDogg69 found a lot of 'new' stuff for my playlist!

    8.5/10
