    A night at section 80

Love the vibe of this mixtape, it's not typically the kind of music I listen too but ironically a ton of these songs were in my liked playlist. Love when these kind of songs pop on randomly when I've got my liked playlist on shuffle.

I had completely forgot about "partyman", my dad had that batman album and I remember listening to it when I was a kid!

The TLC song was funny cause they performed in my city a few years back, the performance was absolutely horrendous and a big money grab but they've still got some classics.

There were a few songs I didn't like on this playlist but I think that comes with the territory that jankland was trying to accomplish with this list of songs. Doubt you're gonna love everyone of these songs unless you're jankland lol or ripper Roo apparently lol

I'm gonna give this mixtape a 7 and add a .5 for the flow and overall vibe of it!

My favorite songs off this list are: time after time, rhythm of the night, be my lover and my perogative

    Overall score: 7.5

    Ripper Raw Review:

I did not expect Roo to be holding a card like this in his back pocket. What a b-----r of a mixtape. The whole thing flows effortlessly. It’s pure old-school hip-hop. I don’t listen to that era very often so all these songs were pretty much new to me.

Favorite songs: It’s Been A Long Time, A Friend. Get Down, Hard Knox, Spice 1, Ready to Die

    9.5/10

h--- yeah man, I had to switch it up on em and surprise em. I’m really glad to hear you enjoyed it, this must be the most positive review I’ve gotten from you yet. Thank you! Another favorites list with It’s Been A Long Time on it, that might be the most liked song out of all the reviews which is awesome to see because it’s one of my favs and legendary at this point

It's a great song. I think this is the first 9 I’ve given. I’ve been trying to keep the ratings as honest as possible, and this one really deserves a high score.

Glad you enjoyed it! Figured some songs would be hit or miss but I felt like this kinda music should be represented in this rotation of tapes.

@jankland - A Night At The Section Eighty

    review

This is a sweet mixtape that does a killer job of showcasing this era’s dancier grooves and mellower tracks alike. Listening to this collection of songs literally gave me a contact high. These tracks emit a s--- ton of cocaine.

The opening track, The Promise, does a great job of setting the mood. This is a very infectious song that I haven’t heard before but liked pretty much everything about it.

When in Rome is followed by Cyndi the goat Lauper. Classic tune, always love hearing it. She has a killer voice and the vibes are immaculate. Love the harmonies in the chorus and the production in general.

The Asia song, Only Time Will Tell, is one of my favorites on here. The chorus sounds familiar and I’m not sure if I heard it before but regardless of that I had fun so much fun with it. Love the guitar on this one and how the hook is mixed!!

The Rhythm of the Night and Be My Lover are tracks I enjoy and recognize for classics that they are but are also songs that make me borderline nauseous because they were among the 12 songs on the playlist of my first ever student job like 10 years ago. I still have PTSD from listening to these 20 times a day for over 2 years.

Partyman was a fun listen. Not much to add, I liked the general vibe of this song.

Fake by Alexander O’Neal was viciously fun. That instrumental just does it for me and the vocals are so fire too. Such a stellar track all around, a huge highlight.

My Prerogative is an amazing track. You have this bouncy hip-hop beat, synthpop elements that make it hit that much harder, and a soul(ish) performance that exudes such a sick, confident attitude. Loved it.

The second half of this mixtape opens up with What About Your Friends, a song that immediately caught my attention because of the very interesting instrumental. It is all over the place (in a very good way) and the verses compliment it very well. Effortless flows and a great juxtaposition of laid back performances with the complex beat.

Plastic Love by Mariya Takeuchi caught me off-guard. Never heard of her but this song is an impressive piece of music. I especially enjoy the production; it has this wall of sound kind of aesthetic, it is mellow yet very engaging and delicately complex. Epitome of feel-good music.

Loved the Luther Vandross pick, too. Stunning production with a very catchy drum loop. Never really listened to Vandross but this song was gorgeous.

Remember Summer Days was a treat to listen to. Never heard the song before but it sounded very nostalgic. This song, among many others from this mixtape, are definitely going on a ‘lazy summer day’ mixtape to blast in the car this upcoming summer.

Smalltown Boy is a song I’m familiar with but have never been a fan of. The instrumentation is cool but the singing just doesn’t do much for me. The track kinda overstays its welcome, imo.

The Miki Matsubara song is the only foreign song on this mix that I was aware of before hand. I found that it achieved a similar vibe for me that both Plastic Love and Remember Summer Days did. It is cool but I enjoyed the other two a tad bit more. Loved the saxophone/trombone parts. The band sounds very good here.

My Flame is a very laid back tune, and that, to me, is one of its most compelling characteristics. It features a great vocal performance, touching lyricism, and a very well assembled instrumental. The guitar is so slick!

Haven’t heard Hounds of Love in a while but appreciated it as the closer to this mixtape. Kate Bush is generally pretty hit or miss for me but I’ve always found this track to be very interesting. Love how borderline neurotic her performance on it is.

Before giving my rating I must say that this was one of the most cohesive mixtapes I’ve heard in this club yet. It went for a very distinct vibe and sound palette but delivered immensely. Props for managing to come up with something so well rounded and thematically consistent. I really loved the mix!

    9/10
