Funniest possible timeline to allow me to listen to a Big Boi album before I ever actually sit through an Outkast album

Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty
(Why is the bold option still f----- lmao)

Whenever people talk about Big Boi, many people automatically start making comparisons. This is the case with many rap duos, whether it be Clipse, UGK, and so on, but with a duo as iconic as OutKast, it's no surprise that people are gonna be discussing this topic. While many people in the mainstream focus mainly on Andre's contributions, it's undeniable that Big Boi holds his own on almost every single track. I'd even say that he outdoes Andre on albums like Southernplayallisticcadillacmuzik and some parts of Aquemini.

A distinct feature that makes Big Boi special, is his coolness. Every sentence that he spits is just oozing with coolness man. And even though it's advertised as half of a duo effort, Speakerboxxx is essentially Big Boi's debut, and it pairs up pretty nicely with the previous duo records. But the fact is, that Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty was released in 2010, 7 years after Speakerboxxx and 3 years after the last OutKast song was released (granted, Andre took more than 2 decades after Love Below, so it isn't like Big Boi took forever like he did lmao). As such, before listening to Sir Lucious Left Foot..., I had to keep in mind that by this point, OutKast was done, and this was Big Boi at a much different point in time.

And honestly, I enjoyed the record. I hate that I keep bringing it up, but this really feels like a direct successor to what Speakerboxxx was doing. Big Boi sounds fresh as h--- on tracks like "Tangerine" and "You Ain't No DJ". In terms of features, I think that most of them did pretty well, with special shout outs to Gucci on "Shine Blockas" (sidenote: based on the gif tha Wreckless used, I 100% thought that he was gonna pick The State vs Radric Davis lmao). My favorite track would probably have to be the outro song "Back Up Plan" however, which has one of my favorite beats on this record. I know that I said that I would detach the OutKast record from my evaluation of this album, but I did get a kick out of the skits and the Big Rube narration on "General Patton"

Production wise, I am a bit mixed however. I think that the tracks produced by frequent OutKast producers Organized Noize and Andre were probably my favorite, and I have to give shout outs to my GOAT Lil Jon. Despite this, I'm not as big on the songs produced by the likes of Scott Storch and Royal Flush.

While I did enjoy my time with Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty, I wouldn't really say that I enjoy it as much as Speakerboxxx. I can't even really explain why honestly. Big Boi is as fresh as ever, and many of the beats and features were pretty good, but as a whole, I feel like the project didn't really grab me, y'know? I do think that it is a very competent record, and it feels like a natural continuation of Big Bo's previous work, but as a whole, I didn't fall in love with it or anything. Still, I am glad that I finally checked it out, and I thank @Wreckless for the pick.

    @Evad - Evad's Time Capsule QUICK REVIEW

    Score: 10.0 (16/16)

Is it safe? Sure. Would this mixtape be perfect for if aliens came to Earth and asked for some of the best music the 70's-90's had to offer (for whatever reason)? Also sure. This mixtape truly feels like a mixtape that somebody in the 90's would've made that captured some of the best music to come out of these decades, and that is what I appreciate about this (besides the obvious that it is 16 back to back bangers).

Glad to see you back, Evad!

    Evad's Time Capsule

Is it a bit safe? Yeah. But considering the time constraints I don't have a problem with it at all.

Play That Funky Music is a very fun opener, classic song in a long line of classics to come

September is one of the most infectious songs ever made, perfect on every level and if there's a person on this earth that doesn't agree then they're devoid of a soul

I really appreciate a Steve Miller pick here, Jungle Love is still known but I'm happy you didn't go for some of the more obvious picks. f---in love Steve Miller Band and this song is no exception.

There's little that needs to be said about Little Red Corvette, in the Prince vs MJ debate I've always listened to more Michael but Prince has so many incredible songs its not even funny, this being one of them of course.

So Fine is one of the only tracks here I haven't heard at least from what I remember, I adore this track though. I'll take funky dance tracks from this era all day, some of my favorite music ever made and this is definitely going in a few playlists.

Even though I've listened to a lot of MJ I haven't been listening to him much the past couple years. I've been recently bumping more Jackson 5 but every time I hear anything off of Thriller I'm reminded it's very arguably the best album ever, and Billie Jean is a highlight of an already incredible project. One of the best songs of all time.

I love Tears For Fears with all my heart so I greatly appreciate this inclusion, Head Over Heels is a personal favorite but they're so good all around. A perfect concentration of every good part of this sound during this time.

Not much to say about It Was A Good Day, nother undeniable classic endlessly listenable.

Nuthin But A G Thang is in a similar boat, I still like Dr Dres newer production but there's something so perfect about his output during this time just a immaculate distillation of the west coast sound that's timeless.

R.I.P. da goat Coolio, Gangstas Paradise is Bohemian Rapsody tier where I think every soul alive has heard this song at some point and for good reason. Another example of a perfect song.

Dear Mama like all the other rap tracks you've chosen is perfect, I think you chose a good list of songs to encapsulate rap for the context of the prompt. I miss hooks like this man.

Everytime I hear this version of The Man Who Sold The World I almost forget its live because it sounds so good. Easily one of the best covers ever made, definitely in the list of cover songs that basically become the official version much like Hurt by Johnny Cash.

Elliott Smith is an artist that's a major blindspot for me even though I've really wanted to give some of his projects a listen so Miss Misery is the only other song in this list I've never heard before. That being said I really really loved it and saved the track almost immediately, thanks for forcing me to listen to someone I knew I'd like lmao

Today is another b-----r, Smashing Pumpkins are goated. I've heard this song so many times I almost have nothing to say about it other than it's great and I'll always be happy to listen to it again.

Out of any band that deserved multiple picks for the prompt Nirvana is probably the one most deserving, not people have heard these songs but it feels blasphemous to not have them represented multiple times. All Apologies was a good pick where it's a classic but it's not in my immediate thought as a pick which I appreciate.

I've been in a more fun depressing music mode than a Radiohead style depressing lately, that being said I almost forgot just how good Exit Music is. Basic b---- answer for my favorite Radiohead song is Karma Police but this is definitely going back in the rotation it's been a minute and its definitely in the conversation, i love Thoms higher register when he start singing harder. Good closer as well!

Favorite Songs: September, So Fine, Billie Jean, Head Over Heels, The Man Who Sold The World, Miss Misery Exit Music.

I love every song but if I'm giving large scores partially due to playlists having a lot of music I've never heard before I figure it's only fair to give a *very* slight demerit for having a lot of extremely well known songs. Either way this was still an incredible mixtape especially considering the time crunch. Good s---! @Evad

@Slyk / @DKC can one of you look into the bold function? It doesn't work properly which makes our reviews look very unprofessional :[

@jankland Thank you :emoji_pray: I have so many vinyls and for some reason haven’t gotten the MTV Unplugged compilation for Nirvana. Some days I listen to it more than the regular albums if I’m feeling in the mood. The covers are great, and I even prefer some of their own songs in these takes.

@DiggleDogg69 And thank you! Glad to be back.

Hard agree about the Unplugged performances, the Nirvana and Alice In Chains performances are some of the best live shows ever recorded. So many definitive live versions of songs.
