h--- yeah! If I'm being completely honest I thought you might hate it lol. I'm glad you enjoyed your time with it and doubly glad you liked the concept, my main goal was that even if people didn't like the sound they'd at least dig the themes and creativity and delve into it a bit so super happy you were a bit more concept focused. Not for everyone especially his vocal style but he's talented for sure.

I f---ing love The Beatles sample on Born Yesterday, one of my favorites on the album and probably one of my favorite songs in general. The music video is also incredible and if I'm in the right headspace gets me a little emotional

Quadeca - I Didn’t Mean To Haunt You

The album has a unique sound, it seems to blend hip-hop with experimental rock and atmospheric music. It’s hard to pin down to one genre which makes it more interesting. It’s different, but in a way that’s not too much, like JPEG Mafia (no offense to him, though). It still feels accessible. It’s cool to see artists pushing boundaries in music.

I hadn’t heard of Quadeca before. Most Youtubers turned musicians I’ve come across haven’t really impressed me, maybe because it’s hard to take them seriously as artists when you already know them from another lane. But Quadeca did a great job here.

Some of the highlights for me were Knots, Don’t Mind Me, Born Yesterday.

This is not something I think i'd revisit or listen to on a regular basis, but I found it to be an interesting project to explore a few times.

Quadeca - I Didn’t Mean To Haunt You

review

I’ve been aware of this guy and his music for a while now but never really sat down with any of his material or gave it a fair shot. The random little snippets of singles that I did hear, though, sounded like something that I’d be very into, instrumentally atleast. That proved to be correct during my time with I Didn’t Mean To Haunt You.

The album opens up with sorry4dying, a song that impressed me with its production and the way it set the mood for the record, but ultimately, did not grab me like some of the other stuff on here. Not to say that it’s a bad track, it’s a very well assembled piece but it pales in comparison to a big portion of this project. The second song, tell me a joke, is where this thing really kicked off for me. Not only is the music on there meticulously gorgeous and grand, but so are the ideas displayed via the interesting lyricism and great melodies; seriously, though… this guy is very talented at creating these almost folkish, indietronica moments. Before elaborating on what I mean by that, I’ll say that I’m ditching the track by track approach which I used for the first two songs solely in order to praise track 2 for how f---ing hard it goes.

Back to this indietronica idea, this record is filled to the brim with these cutting edge, seriously innovative arrangements that combine the acoustic guitar sound that you’d hear on an indie folk record with powerful synths and drums that you’d expect from the likes of Phil Elverum of Mount Eerie and The Microphones or on James Blake’s self titled record. When put in written form like I’m attempting to do here, this might sound like an incoherent mess and a disaster waiting to happen, but Quadeca just somehow manages to make this work pretty effortlessly. This guy is insanely talented, the way he blends these instruments with samples, electronic sounds, and autotune creates an atmosphere that you can’t really find in a lot of music nowadays. Quadeca’s sense of sound and its textures has got to be the number one reason for him being such a fascinating artist; and this album is the number one reason for me, and hopefully others on here, to keep an eye out for his progress. I expect pretty huge things based on his unique style alone.

One thing that did irk me a tad bit was how autotune makes Quadeca’s voice sound. I ain’t hating on autotune, I respect the tool for what it can achieve; a lot of the time, though, it made his voice sound pretty awkward. And I’m usually all about the whiny-a--- voices in indie music (Quadeca’s non-autotuned voice hits this spot rather well).

For the sake of the review I’ll mention how the album is very cohesive and flows seamlessly. Each track has something powerful to offer, be it the quality of the arrangement, the atmosphere, or the melodies. A lot is to be unpacked from this record and as such it offers infinite replayability; thus, my opinions are definitely subject to change. As things stand right now, I’ll definitely stay tuned for Quadeca’s future releases (new album soon), and keep an eye out for his evolution.

I expected myself to enjoy this record quite a lot but not really to the point of giving it a

Clipse- Let God Sort Em Out

Been a fan of these guys since day 1, so ive been super hyped for this release and they definitely didnt disappoint.

First things First, ive always been hard on Pharell, thought his production was boring and always sounded the same, but on this album he killed it. The production on this isnt as grimy as it was on say "h--- Hath No Fury", has more of a polished sound but it works great!

The opener "The Birds Dont Sing" being so personal and not the usual Clipse type song fans are accustomed too was really awesome. John Legend sounds great on the chrous and I love how open and vulnerable both rappers get.

The first 5 tracks are a super solid run, like maybe the best ive seen in awhile. Kendrick and Tyler both k--- it on their features and So Be It and Ace Trumpets are just f---ing awesome.

Mike Tyson Blow To The Face is a f---ing b-----r so is F.I.C.O. Malice and Pusha compliment each other so f---ing well throughout this album. I could honestly listen to this album over and over and never get sick of it.

Nas is also super great in his verse, im pretty sure everything he touches turns to gold at this point in his career.

My only real complaint about this album is when Pharrell is in a song, I dont like it at all. He doesnt fit in with the two brothers and I find him kind of annoying. But once Push or Malice jump on the song I quickly forgive Pharell for being so annoying lol.
In conclusion this album is really f---in good

I can see why you feel this way because I kinda felt this way on h--- Hath No Fury but for some reason Pharrell wasn’t as bad to me on this album. Still not great and I’d rather have the songs without him, but I could at least tolerate him a lot more this time (except for on All Things Considered)

Glad you really liked it! I think I remember him saying Mt Eerie was an influence on this project so it's cool you pointed that out! I see what you mean about the autotune, I ended up getting used to it and enjoying it but the songs with his raw vocals are great, he has a song on his Scrapyard mixtape that came after this called Guide Dog and its super raw and one of my favorites of his.
The new project also seems to be taking a more stripped back approach in terms of vocal processing which should be fun to hear, all of the singles have been great so far so I'm hoping for another AOTY contender outside of the couple others I have! (one contender I'm gatekeeping cause it's my next pick lol)

Glad you pointed out the replayability btw, it's a little sneaky in that way considering the subject matter and overall length/pacing of the record. You wouldn't expect it to be too replayable but I've gone back to this record a lot over the last few years and it's really elevated my thoughts on the project as a whole.

This album has a very different vibe compared to their earlier stuff. Definitely some modern Pusha T influence in their sound. I’m not too familiar with Pharrell's production, but I’ve probably heard a lot of his work over the years. I saw a comment saying his beats sound like pots and pans but this sounds nothing like Yeezus lol

Speaking of Kanye, there’s a moment on All Things Considered where the autotune hits just right and for a split second it sounds like Kanye made a cameo:

“Stuff the walls for tomorrow
f--- I look like tryna borrow”

They picked top notch singles for this album. Theres a lot of good tracks too. Malice the birds, P.O.V., All Things Considered, FICO and Le God Sort Em Out/Chandeliers stand out. The Nas track is absolute heat. How is he still sounding this good? The beat switch on that one is perfect. Easily a top two track on this album for me.

The last track gives me James Bond vibes with the production. Wondering if there’s a sample there?

Their promo game is on point. These guys are everywhere. Complex, Tiny Desk, Breakfast Club... Someone should call Paul to get Em to do this kind of promo for his albums.

And for someone who’s been gone for so long, Malice brings just as much value to these songs as Pusha does. He sounds great.
