Except in school you just fail the class. Here, if someone doesn't submit their review, they get a visit from a guy named Tony who breaks their kneecaps #illuminati

    Distorted Reality

This is similar to Jank's selections but these go harder even if it's still not my style I can appreciate the artistry that is on offer. It starts off with a chilled slow vibe which reminded me a little of Coldplay lol and I'm not knocking it because I actually don't mind some Coldplay joints here and there as a mood setter for different situations. I've even liked some of Linkin Park tunes in the past, so some of these were ok to me.

Wunderhorse, this was easily my favourite joint on the whole tape, the vibe, the beat, the lyrics were all great and I loved that hook. Some of the lyrics resonate well with me no bs. I remember an old 50's or 60s tune called Leader of the Pack too because my parents used to play a lot of the oldies and I remember as a kid loving that song lol.

But then it starts getting hardcore, am I right in saying that lol? I don't know but this unfortunately isn't for me at all... I think I'd end up banging my head against the wall trying to emulate the metalcore artists haha

All in all it was a fun tape but a lot of this isn't my bag but as I said in Jank's review, I do see the appeal of it...

I'm going to tally up Distorted Reality once JJ submits his score in so we can have 6 scores to work with. Aside from JJ, if you need some more time let me know!!

Currently have three scores for Late Night Drive, so that'll be tallied up once we reach 6 scores as well

    Here we go...

I've watched a ton of great movies over the past few weeks, so I figured that it would be a good idea to try to go for a "cinematic" feel, or something like that. Kinda like a story through songs or something, I don't know. Most of the songs here have either been on movies that I've enjoyed, or I think that they would work well in one.

    I present to you...

I’m happy to report that my review for wreck’s tape, despite the fact that someone else would’ve written a 3 part novel in the time this took me, is coming tonight.

    @Wreckless - Distorted Reality

    review

Seeing the tracklist for this tape hyped me the f--- up (Interpol and Wunderhorse representation is makin my s--- hard). So without further ado, I’ll get into the review.

Untitled by Interpol is an undeniable classic and a masterclass in setting the mood. I love this album to bits so seeing this song on here made me want to jump back into TOTBL immediately. Truly an immaculate kick-off to the tape.

Katatonia is a band that I honestly never heard of before but Dispossession kicked a---! I enjoyed the h--- out of the laid-back vibe and the great transition from song 1. The guitar work is great too!

Hum’s If You Are To Bloom continued the sonical cohesion of the tape, and that made me happy as h---. This song is f---ing great and reminds me of some Build To Spill tracks (me and mr. Wreck discussed our shared appreciation for that band earlier, so thanks for going for this vibe). Great textures of sound here, last quarter of the song was especially captivating.

Leader of the Pack is an another banging song on this. This band carries their influencers on their sleeve but I won’t pretend like I mind, honestly I like their sound a lot. The guy’s got a great voice and I’m a big fan of his sense for melodies. Makes for a very satisfying listen.

Love me some Pavement!!! Had so many songs of theirs in the drafts for my previous tapes but never really succeeded in making them truly fit. Stephen Malkmus is a generational lyricist and songwriter, In The Mouth Of A Desert slaps. Such a raw song but, like with nearly every Pavement cut, it keeps its artistic merits prominent as all h---.

The Perfume of Decay has this horror-core quality to it that really leaves a strong impression. Those anxious guitars are so terror inducing and I love em to bits. The vocals (like much of the tape up until this point) have this processed, filtered sound to them, hence they keep the cohesion at a high level. This was a great track as well.

Fine Again sounded a bit derivative of this sound that I’ve been describing so far in the review but since I’m a sucker for the genre I’ll let it pass. Solid cut but not my favorite in any way. The chorus was pretty smooth, though.

Throat Locust was one of my less favorite songs on the tape. I like the performance but found the music kinda ehh, a bit repetitive for my liking. The band sounds like a rip-off Dinosaur Jr but take away the interesting parts.

Jerry Cantrell’s Afterglow sounded huge from the moment it started. I like the lyricism on here, the subdued singing compliments it in a weird but good way. Definitely a song I’d keep on a playlist or two.

Open Your Eyes by Staind is a very very interesting song. That instrumental is so entertaining it’s crazy, especially the little opening sequence that repeats itself for the chorus. I’ll excuse the preacher-man type lyricism cause this genre of moralizing seems, to me, unique for the genre lol.

Bury Me Deep Inside Your Heart does a cool job of working in this gothic, cure-esque atmosphere into a kind of dirtier entity. HIM’s singing didn’t really sound convincing at first but he made up for it with that bit during the bridge and the closing chorus. Absolutely chill inducing.

Another Wunderhorse selection with Butterflies! This one is my preffered song from the two (liked Leader Of The Pack too but this one is infinitely more interesting. Loved the tone of this track and the surreal feel it has. That riff is menacing and works really well when mixed to sound so ethereal. Great tune.

Superheaven and No One’s Deserving was a moment on the tracklist that didn’t really do much for me. The song feels unfinished to me, but it does have potential.

I liked Cenotaph as an idea but it quickly got a bit tedious to listen to. I’ll be a bit cancer and say that, much like with some Billie Eilish music, the whispering vocals make me want to turn the song off lol.

Through and Through got entertaining after a few listens (had to get accustomed to the vocal style) but I liked it overall. The song is very dynamic and interesting, it brought momentum in a strange, innovative way.

Never ever heard of Kylesa so it is safe to say that I had no idea how the closure to Distorted Reality would play out. To my joy, Wreck brought back the atmosphere that was all over this tape and closed the whole thing out with a very strong song. The track is super laid back but is structured very well. Loved everything about it.

Overall, I enjoyed this mixtape a whole lot. I’ll repeat myself once again and give the deserved props for the great transitions and the atmosphere that’s achieved throughout. The mixtape runs for a little over an hour but that runtime just kept flying by for me due to how well put together these, to me, easily digestable tracks were. This was a great entry into the rotation, I’m rating it a

    9/10

I am, once again, sorry for the delay! @Yeez @AOTWClub

    Epic review 10/10.

I can only dream of writing a review like this, honestly. Insight like this matters more to me than the score. You can tell when someone actually took the time to listen haha. Appreciate the time it took you to write this epic review brother

My pleasure brother! Thanks for putting me onto some bangers.

Honestly, the reason it’s been taking me so long to post these reviews, lack of time aside, is mostly because I wouldn’t feel right if I half-assed the thing. Kind of defeats the purpose of the club and I wouldn’t want to do that.

I’ve been thinking of sitting a few rotations out until I can post more regularly but I’m still weighing my options.

I might have to do some track by track breakdowns since a few people here have been doing that. It really just depends on how much time I have, and sometimes there isn’t much to say beyond "I liked this song, didn't vibe with this one". I end up spending a lot of time just thinking of more words to say.

Feel like the words come more naturally for songs or albums I really enjoyed.

That’s why I don’t do track by track breakdowns. I mostly just focus on the songs I favorited because those are usually pretty much the only songs I have something to say about unless there’s a particularly terrible song I need to talk about
