Who even conceives of doing this, though? It's pretty depressing on one level, but sort of unsurprising on another. It's a terrifying time to be single and if you've ever had a s--- relationship, especially more than one, you can see the appeal of what looks like a risk-less interaction.

I learned about AI "companion" tech from a work project a couple years ago; at that time there were 3 or 4 companies in the US with different levels of customization available for subscriptions. You can build your perfect "companion" in every detail: height, build, hair, weight,
cup size, all of it. Call them and speak to them on the phone (extra charge, AI-generatedvoice). You set parameters for their personality, sene of humor,
intellect, interests, everything. You name them.

It was already alarming then but sort of an offshoot of what was beginning with ChatGPT. If you remember the news from when it first came out in November of 22, the first thing the AI did was initiate a romance with one of its beta users, a journalist covering the tech for the NYT. OpenAI shut it down and imposed the first of the interpersonal guardrails.

There are subs and forums out there for people in a community of "AI-lovers" (reddit has a r/MyBoyfriendIsAI sub where people post AI-generated images of themselves with their "mate.")

It's a kind of niche-community so far, like furries in a way.

Mental Health is probably a big factor as to why they do it i suppose. Hey at least the man wins in the argument department lol

Yeah. There's a good slab of research in progress on the mental consequences and ethics.

It's also predatory of the companies in some cases; they're capitalizing on lonely, vulnerable people.

A few companies generate AI deepfakes from voice mail samples, videos, pictures, and other content supplied by the client/family of people who are deceased so that the families can "stay in touch" and keep them alive... for a fee, indefinitely.

Big money. Imagine parents mourning the tragic death of a child, or the sudden death of a spouse.
