It's rating was unjustified I agree. I vote we change the overall score of it to an 8 and you're not allowed to push back.

They Left Me With The Sword & They Left Me With A Gun Review:

Going for the same artists twice is definitely a bold choice. There must’ve been some real demand for Paris Hilton.

“Dogma 25” opens the album strong with a dark, hardcore beat and “Red Eyes” is solid as well. “Holy Spinal Fluid” is decent too. Infinyte I found pretty annoying.

I think both EPs are a mix of hits and misses. There are moments I really like, for example, the chorus on “mudbone” is genuinely great but then it gets weakened by the outro, and the track feels a little too short.

For regular listening, I’m generally not a fan of songs that barely hit two minutes. It feels like you don’t get enough time to really settle into anything. That said, this project isn’t the worst offender by any means.

All in all, it’s an interesting two part project that feels pretty evenly split between strong and weaker moments. If I had to choose, I’d say Sword is the better of the two. Another positive is that projects like this try to do something different, which is always respectable

    6/10

Paris Texas - They Left Me With The Sword

Been interested to listen to these EP's for a while now so excited to finally hop into them!

The Sword is a fun opener reminding me of when older metal bands used to do silly rock opera concept album. The transition into Dogma 25 was dope and the song itself is super fun, great prod and i can see Justins Tyler comparison for the first few lines but it didn't bother me. Good opening!

Red Eyes & Blue Hearts is dope as well, love seeing rap projects stretch their legs a little and get into rockier sounds as Paris Texas is good at. Melodically works pretty well with the instrumental imo.

The transition into Tantrum was jarring in a good way, some of the approach to delivery reminded me of Rocky. The guitars work really well and the switch halfway through and the delivery for this portion is super fun "This b---- got me talking like Jar Jar Binks" is insane lmaooo

Boyz II Men gets my same thoughts as The Sword, if theres others like it assume I'll feel the same so I'll skip mentioning them unless i really have something to say abt it.

The beat on Holy Spinal Fluid is crazy. Theres some LA vibes here in the cadence that works perfect, some really really funny lines. "She f---ing with a goat beastiality" and "Ex b---- transitioned, ex BF now, d-ck so good now she wanna be like me." is hilarious.

infinyte is probably one of the weaker ones to me so far but i still like it, can see it really growing on me. Its a bit repetitive but its catchy. Dig the beat

El Camino is dope, really really love when the guitars kick in on the chorus. A little iffy on the vocal effects but i think i like it. End of the song when it gets a little more aggressive is great. Super solid outro!

Favorite Songs: Dogma 25, Red Eyes & Blue Hearts, Tantrum, Holy Spinal Fluid, El Camino

    RATING
    9/10

Paris Texas - They Left Me With A Gun

Superstar is solid, i assume the rest of the EP is gonna be a little more melodic and eclectic from this opener. Really really like the 2nd verse. Chorus is slightly iffy for me but its already getting stuck in my head which is a good sign. Singing at the end is great.

Twin Geeker is cracked tf out lmao. One of the first times the cadence isn't working fully for me but again the 2nd half is solid. Really appreciate the production work here though. Hook is fun

Stripper Song is a borderline New Wave track at parts?? Took me a second to get used to it but this one is dope. Love the delivery, my favorite of this EP so far.

mudbone is super fun, the almost indie rock evolution to the beat in the hook is really good. Their approach to the verses are pretty inspired. One of my favorite choruses in both project so far.

Transitions into H A L O perfectly, kinda love this one, reminds me a bit of the mid 2000s rock movement right before the genre died which has some of my favorite s---. Really catchy!

No Strings is really f---ing good, one of my favorites of this EP. Love the singing here, almost wish it was fully singing but the 1st verse here is good, 2nd verse is absolutely perfect.

Favorite Songs: Stripper Song, Mudbone, H A L O, No Strings

    RATING
    7.5/10

I agree that the first EP is better but i appreciate how eclectic they got in the second. Really happy to have finally checked these out. Thanks @lowkitz ill definitely keep listening to a large of chunk of these now!

    OVERALL RATING:
    8.5/10

    Olivia Rodrigo- Guts Review

All I really know of Olivia is that shes hot and I don't particularly love her singing voice. But shes hot as f---, so ill forgive her.

After a couple listens to this album i take back the voice comment. Her voice is really solid on here.

Id only heard bad idea right and vampire before listening to this and I absolutely hate bad idea right? But her vocals are solid on this album.

I really enjoyed all american b----, and how the chrous was intense but the verses are soft. It caught my attention right away.

I only really dont enjoy bad idea right, for the most part all the other songs range from decent to pretty good.
One thing this album reminds me of is like that time frame after high school, a fair amount of the lyrics come across kinda immature, although I feel my recent dating most of the women could relate to these childish lyrics so maybe it reminds me of current times too.

Anyways my favorite songs on here are: all american b----, vampire, logical, ballad of a home schooled girl, the grudge

I woukdnt go out of my way to listen to this album again, but its a solid album overall.

    Score: 6.5/10

    Olivia Rodrigo - GUTS
I've said it before, but I'm generally pretty excited to check out every album that's picked. But sometimes you get an album pick that automatically makes you say "h--- yes, I can't wait to listen to this!"

    This is one of them

Some of the other members can vouch (especially if you're a fellow zoomer), but the OR moment that came in the wake of "driver's license" was absolutely insane. You simply could not escape OR throughout the summer of 2020, and for good reason, since every single she dropped was incredible (I still think "good 4 u" is one of the best singles of the decade so far). I went back to look at the old thread we had for SOUR, and it's crazy to see how great that whole era was. I'll post a link to the thread below, but it's pretty interesting to see how posters were reacting to that era in the moment.
    https://forum.sectioneighty.com/olivia-rodrigo-sour-album-out-now.t313256

Now as for GUTS, I have to admit that I wasn't keeping up with the moment as much. I've checked out the album a couple of times, and there are some songs that I've been pretty keen to revisit, but I was thinking of revisiting it in the near future, so Ripper's pick was a very nice, and welcome surprise.

"all-american b----" is a good intro, even though I'm more of a "brutal" guy, personally. Now, I know that this is a given since it's one of the singles, but "bad idea right?" is INCREDIBLE. 10/10 song. That chorus is killer. I'm a bit more mixed on "vampire". The chorus is once again incredible, but the verses don't do much for me. I never really paid much attention to "ballad of a homeschooled girl" before, but it was one of my favorites on this revisit, which was pretty surprising.

I want to give a special highlight to yet another single, "get him back!" which has the potential to knock down "good 4 u" as my favorite Olivia song. The verses are so witty, and (I know I sound like a broken record), that chorus is KILLER.

Now, I do have to address my biggest "issue" with Olivia's music as a whole. I say "issues" because this is really just a matter of taste, and not really a problem in the traditional sense. My favorite Olivia songs like "good 4 u", "get him back!", etc, are mostly rock-influenced. And I think she's absolutely great at that sound. While the more traditionally pop-focused songs on the record are pretty good ("teenage dream" is an especially good closer), they don't really grab me in the same way that the rock songs do. If Olivia made a full on rock record, I have no doubt that it would be one of my top albums of the year.

Overall though, I had a pretty good time revisiting GUTS. Aside from the songs I already liked, I really enjoyed "ballad of a homeschooled girl" so that's in my rotation now. Big thanks to @Ripper Roo for the pick, and I can't wait to see what Olivia's next project is like!
