Feb 23, 2015 is this a serious question? something as miniscule as skits wouldn't prevent an album as great as this from being a classic skits may bring the overall narrative together but at the end of the day, the actual songs hold 10x more weight
Feb 23, 2015 Would you be willing to be part of the forum fiction team? Your transition as a poster intrigues me
Feb 23, 2015 Skits are not a small part bruh. The concepts is not near as easy to grasp without the skits that allow the listener to follow. That's why this concept is so praised. I agree that the music is special regardless of the skits but you're also forgetting the skits before, during, and after SAMDOT that make that song so powerful. You can't downplay the importance of the skits imo. They are what make the album feel like a movie. Big Sean still went to far though.
Feb 23, 2015 Sean could be saying that about anybody really. How you guys know that its definitely at Kendrick?
Feb 23, 2015 Yes its a serious question. Y'all are just making it seem like a ridiculous question because not many people question this album but you're acting like these are regular skits that you get on every album. They aren't miniscule in GKMC, they are what ties the whole story together from front to back. Without the skits, the storyline is way harder to grasp. From the death scenes in GKMC, the skits before dying of thirst, the prayer seen afterwards, that alone is proof of how powerful skits are within the context of this album. I believe the music is incredible don't get me wrong. But GKMC doesn't feel this much like a movie without skits.
Feb 23, 2015 YG used skits in his album too tbh. But it doesnt work cause no one considers YG the savior.
Feb 23, 2015 nothing wrong with questioning this album but out of all the arguments, the claim that the skits is what makes this album classic is silly. in your efforts to try to "question this album" all your doing is nitpicking and not looking at the big picture. Sure, the story would be harder to grasp without the skits and it does enhance the overall experience to make it feel like a movie, but to say this wouldn't be a classic if it weren't for the skits downplays all the other incredible aspects of this album (which holds more weight) and just goes alittle too far. The storytelling on Art of Pressure, the emotion on SAM, the hunger on Money Tress, the production on BDKMV are all example of things in isolation that have more value than the skits. Skits isnt a good enough argument as to why this album isnt a classic.
Feb 23, 2015 Fair enough. There's a lot of great aspects to GKMC. I don't feel like its silly to say skits push this album into classic status because its not like its the GOAT album or its flawless. The elements that take this over the edge and into classic status for me are SAMDOT and the skits. I respect your opinion I just don't see how you can believe these are just skits. These are literally the best skits on any rap album I've ever heard imo and I think they add a lot more to the album than you think. I'm not sure the movie coming out that is based on GKMC is made if the album didn't have those skits and it was just the music EDIT: Quote from Kendrick himself "And I write my songs as stories you would read in a book. I put as much thought into the skits and the structure as the music" http://metro.co.uk/2013/01/04/kendr...-to-skits-and-structure-as-the-music-3337397/
Feb 23, 2015 h--- I don't get how anyone can argue against your logic. Without the skits/overall narrative tying it all together, a LOT of those songs people cling so heavily to have no backstory or general motivation. He created something folks cared about,by creating a grand scheme of a young man in LA going through XYZ. Without those skits? It's just a bunch of songs with no connection to each other really. That's what sold GKMC.
Feb 23, 2015 http://www.djbooth.net/index/tracks...ean-my-myself-i-freestyle-kendrick-lamar-diss UPDATE: Big Sean reached out directly via DM to say that those lines aren’t directed at Kendrick, or anyone in particular, so beef eaters will have to go hungry on this one. Sean straight up lying. He should have stuck with what he said or not said it all.
Feb 23, 2015 GKMC is not good only for its skits, but I get where Sean is coming from. Kendrick is getting too preachy
