Are implying you can't live under a specific context and still be a great writer? And I mean I can provide more example, I just assumed we were all speaking in broad strokes atm

But yeah re: that edit, it can definitely help. but not in all cases. ill go ahead and list random favorite lines from this album, but none of them are going to make you think he's an impressive writer just by reading them on paper.

And if you have the mindset that Jcinator does, that this kind of process is prerequisite or some sort of baselines for judging good writing, then you're never gonna understand the mindset WPG has.

great writing from billy woods is different than great writing from thug. thats where i stand.

despite the "ran from my weed like it farted" line (which is just humor built off s--- like "b---- dont get close this a warning or "s--- that d-ck good im the warden") i think his verse on Never Had it fantastic. it contains:

I never said he was one of the best writers in hip hop, WPG did, but it's MUCH more offbase to dismiss his writing than it is to claim that it serves its purpose and shows moments of brilliance

lol its not a matter of not "understanding" pauls mindset. trust me u guys arent arguing anything that breathtaking. im not even arguing against thug, im not that familiar with his work. instead im taking issue with a lack of argument, and masking that behind gobbledygook relativism

@Narsh when I read old man and the sea im blown away by the simple prose-- ofc, when hemingway does it, its brilliant, when 95% of s80 does it, theyre morons. i guess thats your general point, boiled down

I don't really agree with this, because in this case it's not free-writing, but many rappers treat it this way.

I'm not saying that Thug writes notes (I'm talking about musical notation) before his lyrics (I have no clue about it lol) but he clearly writes his lyrics based on the beat and the melodies, that's why I mentioned bands as an example; because they write their notes and then the song (lyrics) is writen on these notes to sound good. Also, the writing (with the different metres, different rhyme schemes etc) plays a large part on the outcome of how Thug sounds on the beats (his bad moments aren't excused by his great performance, but this performance is the outcome of his thought process). Sure, a better writer would avoid some bad lyrics while staying in character, but that doesn't make Thug lazy (which was my main objection of what you said). He just has a different approach than the regular rapper, similar to that of bone thugs' for example. His writing can improve, but it won't make his music that much better imo. And that's the main focus I think.

We disagree that better writing will not make his music better even though I completely comprehend all the points you made.

And ESL = English as Second Language.
Im ESL too, we could just be glad we have that in common lol.

Well ofc it'll be better for me too if he stopped writing fart lines xDD but yeah, I just thought that it might help you with the album, since you're already enjoying it and it's certainly a grower

For sure. I'll definitely give it another spin as a whole and I'll keep in mind yours and @Narsh's opinions on it. I just like to keep the most open mind about any particular subject, which sometimes involves me playing devil's advocate.
About my english, it better not be bad considering I've been living in the US for about 10 years now lol. Thanks for the compliment regardless though haha

If Em stopped with the fart lines, itd be better music because chances are he was trying to make a serious track

if thug stopped id having nothing to laugh at or contrast with the moments he's not as simple, which is what makes him so intriguing. so, and this is a stretch i know, but for examples sake, if he stopped his "fart" lines it might actually make the music less entertaining lol

replace "fart" with like his "slime" lines or "bleedin'" etc etc. the stuff you might think is lesser is part of the character, so they are working to their fullest potential

sure we can pretend like we know that if thug had a more clever line about his weed being loud it would be better music, but i highly (no pun intended) doubt that

im also not too familiar with thugs earliest projects before 1017 thug, but i know there was more "straightforward" rapping on those projects...hearing his evolution as an artist is so interesting

difference between 1017 thug 1 and Rich g--- tha tour 1 is gonna be pretty crazy

rich g--- tha tour > life though. top 5 projects of last year, and, for me, one of the best since 2010.

btw Tha Tour 1 is amazing. Easier to listen to than 1017 for me.
