Lol at the Jidenna avi @Jay Daniels

I've never seen an issue with an artist producing their own music. In fact, to me as much as I can get coming from the artist is ideal as long as it sounds good. And Cole does though that's subjective. He won't be uninteresting to me because I can handle artists that have consistent aspects of their music as long as the music is still of quality. As I said in a different thread BS and FHD evoke very different environments anyway so I enjoyed the different sounds there. J. Cole's simple honestly and relatability is actually a lot of what gets me. And the music itself is still able to provoke nice thought and analysis from me. Which a lot of artists just can't do for me.

But if people are bored and always want something different, I understand with a music industry that feels oversaturated. You have to do a lot more to grab anyone's attention. And even more to keep it.

We've been treated by an abundance of great projects from rappers from all walks of life. We've had some fantastic releases, if you're listening well enough.

That's definitely the whiteness coming out of me - that or it was at 5.55AM :'(

    MTY VERY SHALLOW LISTENING

Okay, while 40 and Drake or maybe Metro and Future are pretty tight together, they both don't know exactly what the other wants. When 40's making beats for Drake, he definitely has Drake in mind but he doesn't exactly know what Drake wants, giving Drake a slight challenge. Same goes for Future and Metro.

And J. Cole's not even a bad producer, it's just that certain artist who self-produce do fall into the trap of not challenging themselves with their production which causes their music to suffer. There's exceptions, obviously (Tyler, Kanye, DOOM, etc.), but rappers can fall under that trap. And it doesn't really hurt that Cole is the "perfect" stereotype for a rapper, as he hits a lot of things that most people would want in their perfect rapper, but that ends up causing him to be boring as he doesn't really have a lot of uniqueness because of being the perfect rapper stereotype.

He could definitely benefit from a more well rounded sound, but i don't buy the idea that his music is boring because his production isn't challenging enough. He's produced songs like work out and power trip, which aren't really what people think of as typical j. cole type of songs. that shows his production isn't just stagnant and he can adapt and create different sounds if he needs to.
I'm not sure exactly what you mean by the perfect rapper argument, but that sounds like a more well thought out argument than the self production thing.

You just listed three of the most overhyped mainstream albums of the year - well done. I'm not surprised you think this year has been poor.

You mind listing a few examples and maybe saying what type of hip hop they are. I've definitely been sleeping on new releases this year, and I can usually relate to your opinions.

Cole would benefit as much as anybody from his own team of outside writers and producers.. Dudes talented and has a great core fan base but he needs to draw inspiration from others. But just like the "needing to produce everything himself" thing he seems like the type that's too "proud" to let others contribute in that way.
