Sep 27, 2015 I just come at it from my perspective as mainly an EDM producer. I have to have my music able to stand on it's own without features, so it's different for me I suppose. Ah, see I luck out here since I don't do any sampling with mine. I can just go off what I already have and make up something new and it'll generally fit if it sounds right and I pull together some good arrangements No problem man.
Sep 27, 2015 Yeah there is an entirely different take/approach to the two genres lol. Although you do have those hiphop producers who are able to have their beats stand on there own.. I.e. Flying lotus, el-p Yeah lol I mean I do organic stuff in my beats once in a while if I feel it calls for it, but usually it's minimal, like a soft pad during a chorus section, or a soundscape, etc.
Sep 27, 2015 I have to do entirely original mixes for a couple or reasons. One being I'm insanely inexperienced with sampling and have really no song pool appropriate from which to sample from, and another being I also just can't see it working out well with the kind of music I make. Also, really picky and a control freak about my music, so even if I could I wouldn't. It would drive me crazy to not be able to edit and change things in the sample (since it's a sample lol), and I'm very use to combing over every inch of my tracks and changing notes here and there and adjusting everything individually over a long period of time as I produce a song. It also makes me look at my own music differently knowing I've input every single bit of it, vs something like my remixes, which I absolutely despise. I honestly contemplate deleting them off my soundcloud everyday, even though they bring in the plays, so I let them stay.
Sep 27, 2015 That's so me, but with organic production lol. I have plenty VSTs to choose from, it's just that I can't play for s--- and it's just not my thing. Usually the only organic things I do are bass lines and drums, although I've been gravitating towards drum breaks now. It's a different feel as opposed to digital drums and it's more my style. In relation to your second paragraph - that's true musicianship. I respect that. I've had that point of view with crafting my album. It's been in the works for 5 months now and it's almost done. I never realized how OCD and obsessed I get. My perfectionism really comes out when I'm working on a project, weather it be my own or someone elses
Sep 27, 2015 that's the funny thing about this is I've never been able to play an instrument in my life, and I was able to pick up producing like this like it was nothing in just a couple years time. i guess FL is my instrument at this point. I'm just glad I found a way to make music after 20 years, I was pretty sure I never would. appreciate it fam i put in work on my s--- and it's nice to know ppl care about that kind of thing d--- I feel you. Autumn Storm originally started out in March this year as Just Breath EP, right after I dropped The Coldest Winter. I ended up scrapping everything for that and starting work on this album like a month after that, so it's been maybe 4-5 months now? Not sure when it transitioned to this from Just Breathe but it was like a whirlwind after, and every song on it showcases my best production to date and everything from the concept to the story is just my absolute best. I cannot wait to finally release it in November, and it's insane that by the time everyone else hears it I'll have heard nearly every part of the album 200x's from working it all over and over again.
Sep 27, 2015 Yup I feel you. The Smiling Entity started out as a 6 track EP, then an 8 track, then an 11 track album etc. As time went on with more songs that I wrote and more beats that I produced I started getting a real vision for the project and then turned into this 16 track album. I think from May to July was all beats and a little writing. Then I narrowed it down and started writing specifically for the project. But I can't tell you how many times I've altered the tracklisting up until this point. An artist is never completely satisfied haha
Sep 27, 2015 Yeah Just Breathe went from like 3 tracks to 4, to being scrapped and a song off of it coming out as a remix. Autumn Storm was always set to be 11 tracks like Coldest Winter was, with 9 songs and the 3 interludes. But it's just been a journey since I started it to get there and narrow down my concept while at the same time expanding on it and the story. Originally I was just going to tell a sort of thrown together little story with the interludes and song names like on Coldest Winter that just tied into the name, but I wanted it to actually really be about something this time and have an impact emotionally, and it's led me into writing lyrics for some of the features and producing the absolute most complex interludes I've put together thus far (that part has actually be insanely stressful, trying to find the right sound samples to build these scenes and s--- is<<<<<<<<<), but I'm pretty sure I've pulled it off. And I'm happy to say this is the first project where it actually has true meaning to me, like I can say this X is about Y and this is why and how it relates to everything else. I've never done that before, and I didn't realize going into it that I would. It's helped me see exactly what kind of music I want to make after this, especially after having so many people tell me my music can at times be cinematic. I'm always going to try and approach new projects the way I approached this now. And yeah the tracklist, I just switched a couple tracks around like yesterday or the day before after I was thinking about the flow of the album and the meanings again lol. I can't remember how many times that's happened now. I do it on a whim constantly and then relisten through the album to see how it fits and then change it again.
Sep 28, 2015 I feel you 100%. I can honestly say that by working on my project, I have gained a new sense of empowerment and insight into my self and the world, and it feels great. Even if I have to redo a song several times, I want to make sure everything is near perfect as possible. s--- I even rewrote say hello black Crow 3 different times before I sent it to Jake.
Sep 28, 2015 This so much. I thought I had found that with Coldest Winter, but I'd only scratched the surface and just found the beginnings of where I could go with a concept and didn't know how to take it to a real story level like this and I didn't put much effort into it because of that. This time I've had it all planned out and I just keep adding to it and it's amazing the s--- that'll just pop into my head when I'm working on something or listening through, I've gotta run to my computer to put the changes in or grab my phone to copy it down on my todo list, because I just keep finding ways to expand on it all and find new meaning for each of the songs. I love it. This is the most proud I've ever been of a project.
Sep 28, 2015 Yup this. I'm always thinking of s--- to say, formulating rhymes and poems in my head literally all day. It can be a little maddening but it's beautiful at the same time. Even with my album which has been in the works for almost half a year, I feel like I'm just scratching the surface of my true potential. Yet again, I feel like I'm pretty deep into it too, but there's a lot more that's to be discovered
Sep 28, 2015 I can't even begin to wonder at where this album will take me, and where I'll go after. I've thought about after this, maybe revisiting Coldest Winter in a way with some sort of sequel, with the same/similar concept/story it has. But I'll take it and actually expanded upon what I had with a real story and better production and more features, as well as a longer length for the release so it's more like an album. On top of that, I'm planning to do up movie posters for promo haha, I want to really set the cinematic stage with it
Sep 28, 2015 For sure. After The Smiling Entity, I'm gonna do some production work for some friends of mine, and start working on an EP me and a friend are planning, as well as an EP next spring or so with a certain member here I've been thinking about a beat tape too. Who knows where the road will take us.
Sep 29, 2015 me and @Bleed are suppose to try and possibly get something going together next year, who u down w/
