Jun 24, 2015 People were pointing out that The Master was a spiritual sequel to TWBB before it was even out. The synopsis alone makes it dead obvious that he wanted religion to be the antagonist this time instead of capitalism.
Jun 24, 2015 Religion wasn't exactly heralded in TWBB either lol (and capitalism in The master) but yeah I agree A lot of other parallels, from the story itself to the performances, to be made for sure
Jun 24, 2015 1. There Will Be Blood 2. Boogie Nights 3. The Master 4. Magnolia 5. Punch-Drunk Love 6. Inherent Vice 7. Hard Eight might be my favorite director.

Jun 24, 2015 I was faded beyond belief when I saw it in theaters and completely wasted the experience Need to rewatch it badly
Jun 24, 2015 Personally: 1. Magnolia 2. There Will Be Blood 3. Boogie Nights 4. Punch-Drunk Love 5. The Master 6. Inherent Vice Yet to see Hard Eight. I know The Master and Inherent are both acclaimed af, and I see the merit in both of them. Both have a series of phenomenal performances (Phoenix and Hoffman in The Master are two of the most amazing displays of acting I've ever seen tbh) but I can't pretend to have little more say on the films other than I appreciate the beauty and language of the films. I've seen The Master probably 4 times and still feel there is so much I need to unpack from it to truly understand it, and only saw Vice once in theaters and god knows that will need a ton of rewatches (but honestly this scene is otherworldly amazing: Like Captain Awesome said, 2-4 are very interchangeable (for me personally at least) as they all offer different viewing experiences. But the amount of pathos in Magnolia I think will always draw me in more than any other of his films, no matter how amazing I know they are all for the most part. The way PTA uses Aimee Mann's music throughout the film, and for how sprawling and overly ambitious it is but to end on such a small, personal note and somehow work is nothing short of amazing. My two cents.
Jun 25, 2015 @WPG out of curiosity, u mention IV is evidently better appreciated if you've read the book... i dont disagree, but do you think that's a legitimate pov? a movie should stand on its own merits, no?
Jun 25, 2015 It does stand on its own merits, but a lot of people dislike the film because they were expecting something different whereas if you had read the book or were familiar with Pynchon in general, you would know that it does the source material complete justice.
Jun 28, 2015 I definitely recommend reading the novel but I think even if you just watch the film again you'll be able to pick up on more stuff. Everything you need to know is right in the movie, it's just subtly conveyed so it's easy for it to get lost in the madness the first time around. I still think people place too much stock in understanding the plot; the point is to place the viewer in Doc's shoes, and since he's constantly stoned and doesn't know what's going on half of the time, it only makes sense that the viewer would feel the same way.
Jun 28, 2015 Regretfully, I've only seen Magnolia and There Will Be Blood. I love watching films, but I'm really, really bad at keeping up with them. I'm in the middle of reading Inherent Vice, which was my attempt to delve deeper into both Pynchon and PTA. Def gonna watch the film once I'm done, and The Master's been on my list for awhile.
Jul 1, 2015 seemed like the best place to put this: PTA to write and potentially direct a live-action verson of Pinocchio with Robery Downey Jr. Wut. http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplayl...-bros-pinocchio-for-robert-downey-jr-20150701
