May 20, 2016 but srs TPAB is a great album...so its no surprise that people went ape s--- over it (during its release) and praise it like they do (now). you cant deny the importance of this album for this decade as being "different". I think what Kendrick went for with this album was to really creating a unique sound for this generation. 100 years from now how do you think that will compare to whats being released?
May 20, 2016 At first I wanted kendrick to stick to that jazzy/funky style as it results in him making his best music, also who better to have in your circle than Kamasi Washington, Thundercat, Flylo and Terrance Martin? But now I want kendrick to try something new, I want Kenny to continue to progress.
May 20, 2016 it's very important for the west coast, but it's not different, its cultural bro. Like herbie said, its revolutionary in the way that it brought back the original sound from L.A. And like Anderson said, it helped widen that opening for him and other artists
May 20, 2016 lol idk, I've only listened to a handful of his singles. @ThyNeighbour might have the answers though
May 20, 2016 This is r-----ed He's been on the decline since gkmc, tpab is his worst studio album by far and UU literally had two decent songs (im being generous) Kendricks voice is like nails on a chalk board and he's too caught up in concepts and other bs and forgot to make the music sound good. I want more like gkmc with his smooth flow, great lyrics and monotone-ish voice. I saw that on the second half of untitled 2 dont know why he cant go back to that
May 20, 2016 I don't think thats what he wants to do. Brainfeeder had a chat with Punch and they talked about how kendrick decided not to make "mainstream" music anymore. Apparently, he will try to have a few songs for the radio, but these won't be featured on his main albums...So you can definitely expect him to drop more songs like "i" that won't make it on his albums, or more UU albums that will be the throwaways of his previous projects.
May 20, 2016 Thats exactly what I was thinking about. It's crazy how he keeps getting better and better. I can't even imagine him making a better album than tpab, but with kenny, everything is possible.
May 20, 2016 He has a long and prosperous career ahead of him, I think he's absolutely brilliant and has the greatest understanding of black music and its influences on hip hop music out of every new MC I have heard out of this decade. At least thats what he proved with his last album
May 20, 2016 As long as he keeps those great musicians/artists in his circle, I can see him making more great albums on the same level as tpab.
May 20, 2016 He has definitely found the winning formula. I feel like he was a better rapper 5 years ago, but now the kid is so much better at making music, its like he was studying music all these years You can tell he was influenced by Ye for this; find the greatest musicians possible, lock yourselves away for 2 years, record music.
May 20, 2016 I agree, TPAB is great. But the critical narrative didn't stop there. Because, like you said, it was "different" (which, by itself, has NOTHING to do with quality) it was destined to be overrated from the jump. And why should I care what people will think of TPAB when I'm dead? lol
May 20, 2016 ^The tpab's praise was about the quality. The album wasn't "different". It's probably different for those who aren't familiar with this music, or for young people, but tpab's music goes way back and everything about it (sonically, musically) was meticulously thought about. Thats why the album deserves every bit of praise, that s--- was musically brilliant.
May 21, 2016 :/ well that's a bummer...that means we'll mostly have to wait for him to release whole albums
