But do you see how explaining that importance would be a better thing than just sarcastic jabs?

Absolutely, I apologize if my dickishness is overriding this thread, but I was mostly making an offhanded comment about these discussions. There's several noteworthy non-@twan posters who simply have a tendency to overrate more recent films. you're quoting peter sellers under your avatar for f---s sake, you should 100% be on board with this point, regardless of my message

...that is... unless you're actually a poseur heh

Half of my favorite films were probably made in the past two decades. I own a copy of Being There and plan to watch Lolita after I read it, but I've literally never seen another Pete Sellers movie. We have a thread (FlickYouCrew) for the handful of people on here who are film buffs who happen to be on a hip-hop culture forum. These threads don't cater to them.

    ^disagree, civility is overrated.

another random thought: pitt is a great movie star, but hes not the most unforced actor. in other words, its usually hard for him to disappear into roles. thats why i personally selected moneyball as my #1, its a rly strong movie star turn. (by extension, his appearance in something like 12 years a slave, his presence is effectively a signal of modernity more than it is an actual character) -- thoughts? lists are cool, figured id toss out an actual discussion point

I recently compared drake trying to play act and rap like a drug kingpin to this very movie star effect you're talking about. I actually had brad pitt in mind lol

While he may not necessarily disappear into roles, I think hes proven to be a really strong character actor who happens to look like a leading man, as disparate roles in The Tree of Life, TAoJJ, Inglourious Basterds and Burn After Reading would prove (I agree though that his part in 12 Years was jarring). However, with the right part like Fight Club or Moneyball, he's also capable of being a charismatic screen presence who can carry a film.

I like smaller and foreign films (movies are for plebs tbh), in part, for this very reasons. US stars become so big that they break immersion pretty easily. I don't think it's completely his fault as an actor either. A lot has to do with him being larger than life and in the public eye so often. We're in the age of movie posters being giant faces of A-List actors who will draw tickets. They are a brand.

Yeah, I agree with this. That's a good distinction, certainly early on. (I'm not a Burn After Reading fan, and I think that's an example of Pitt "moonlighting") -- further, and this is a quibble, TAoJJ, to me, affirms my original point. That movie acts as a mirror for Pitt's own relationship to fame and celebrity. The film would be far less successful without a star of Pitt's magnitude lending a meta commentary on the film's proceedings.

    Narsh what

That's right, and I'm glad you asked. In SNL IN REVIEW, I look back at some of the notable cinematic efforts from Saturday Night Live alum, and place them in context of the actor-comedian’s career. Take a look, I'd dig your (and everyone's) thoughts:
