Typical Sean album really, like his other 2 projects, the novelty of the stand-out tracks will soon wear off too. The production is clean af, but it's actually a bit faceless and lacks character. Sean himself is like the default rapper on a video game, with a sprinkle of humour. Props to him for those guest features leading up to this, that 'Detroit' mixtape in 2012 also had some gems, but I might skip his next album after this.

You took the words right out of my mouth. No matter how hard Big Sean tries to be more charismatic, he will always fail at some point. He's capable of making one or two good bangers per year, but that's it. Cohevise album made by him is an abstraction. Additionally, his offbeat flow really puts me off, so even if he made some decent-to-good tracks I have no desire to listen to them again.

Based upon 18 ratings (I didn't count any of you fuckboys who couldn't be f----- to write half a sentence), SectionEighty gives Dark Sky Paradise a 6.9.

Seems about right. I personally gave it a bit higher of a score, but I understand why some wouldn't like it as much.

pretty inoffensive, but still extremely enjoyable, record. also, first full album ive heard from sean.

gets really corny at the end of deep/into "one man" lol

    7/10

edit: guess who didn't read the thread/is late to the party

I had no interest in ever listening to a Big Sean album again after hearing what a massive piece of s--- Hall of Fame was (though I liked the first two songs as well as Guap and Control, even though neither of which made the album). I decided to give it a chance after seeing a short track listing and hearing IDFWY and Blessed. You might be surprised.

I don't even remember HOF and I'm pretty sure I listened to it. I have no doubt that I could get through it and might even like a couple songs. I just don't see myself picking it over something else to listen to.

Man I read your review and I agree with most of your points [Big Sean seems to have put more effort here than in previous projects like HoF and Detroit (mentioning these because I've listened to them), the production is very good, the Drake/Ye features work well and generally his work ethic should be praised] but I didn't like the result and couldn't finish the album (I made it to track 9, and that's why I didn't post earlier). I like a couple of songs, but I couldn't find any interest in Big Sean's raps most of the time, and there were moments that he was annoyingly corny (I Don't f--- With You is the prime example, as you mentioned), and it's really off putting, because this is already considered his best work, and it sounds like he's trying to deliver a good record but it has s--- like this, along with the signature off beat raps here and there, or failed attempts at being funny, which lead me to not really care about the deeper songs, or the album as a whole. Like, if it's the best he can do, I won't even bother; I was actually surprised that so many people liked this album, so I guess Big Sean's just not for me, at least not in that high of a dose.

@Olorin like I said, I can see why some people don't like it, but I think it's a fun album for what it is. I might have rated it a few points too high, but he's definitely shown a lot of improvement/progress IMO, and I can appreciate that.

Word man I get where you're coming from, I just focused more on the negative for this one. Ratings can be tricky but since you see the appeal, it's good to give it a bit extra credit for the effort, this album just didn't work for me :)

edit: this smiley looks kinda creepy
